I wonder if Megashark is going to make a cameo?

I'm glad SyFy are producing programs that are actually SF. I'd prefer they do something other than this, though.
They have a new series called Defiance that might be okay. It looks a bit Firefly-ish - but more DS9 than TNG, perhaps.

I actually set my DVR to catch defiance. I was disappointed with Alphas. We shall see about this new one.

Defiance has a interesting concept by tying the series to the MMORPG Trion's making.
We shall see if that lives up to the hype.

In short, the Jihad is over. It ended just as SandRider predicted it would, not with a bang or even a whimper, by simple attrition.

I have torrent read for Defiance. I also thought Alphas was a disappointment. I watched three episodes and quit.Omphalos wrote:I actually set my DVR to catch defiance. I was disappointed with Alphas. We shall see about this new one.

Is defiance on already?

I actually do not have high hopes for defiance. I am expecting a bunch of plucky freedom fighters who, live in a world with a bunch of rejects from Star Wars' cantina scene. But the advertisement at least had "the look" so I'm going to go back on my word to NEVER watch SyFy again (said when those bastards cancelled SGU) and see what's what.

Re: Ringworld and Childhood's End to be butchered by SyFy
I don't have very high expectations for Defiance, either, but I'm leery of TV SF generally. I think it's very hard to do well and be a successful show. It's rare that a show that has good writing and decent SFX, and even rarer that it also gets enough traction to last more than a season. I just wish SyFy would realize that and keep trying anyway.
BSG worked, I think, because people were fascinated enough with the connections to and differences from the 1980s series to stay for a few episodes and get hooked by the intelligent writing. Reasonable FX and the lack of pew pew lasers helped, too.
Caprica was interesting, in that in some ways it was classic, Asimovian SF - exploring the impact that technological advances have on society. I can understand why SyFy might have interpreted its failure as a sign that people don't want SF series, because it was more SF than BSG, in that way. I liked it, but thought it suffered from trying to be too many things at once, which slowed the pacing down.
