It hasn't.

The only new post since the last time I checked (about ten hours ago, before going to bed), was by Arny on the Cydonia thread; he warbles on about the pyramids in Mexico and then links to a European Space Agency page with a composite video of the area and text that clearly says the "face" is just a big rock. I have no idea what he thought that proved, if anything.

Addendum:

I was talking to Teg last night and one thing we were wondering about is why some of these decisions aren't being made after consultation among the admins. The "mood" of one admin shouldn't have such far-reaching consequences.

Again, this is why I think that, on large boards, admins should have accounts separate from their usual user accounts. And any moderation, warnings, etc., should include a citation of the appropriate board rules.

None of that is gonna cure Hyppo's weirdness. She wants to make spot decisions on what "the rules" mean, based on how much she likes you. That wont change until she is gone, which she will NEVER do. What the fuck else is there to do in Red Deer? Hang out at Chapters and argue with the government over how they are now responsible for her father and she isn't?

Well, I'm not going to speculate on motivations and all that because I really, honestly, couldn't care less. I just think it's sad that the place seems (at the moment) to be slowing down to the same old low level of activity as before the Diaspora. (At least, that's my perception.)

If Arnold is the only one who's going to be posting there, there's not much reason to go by except to take potshots at him.

It's a flop forum. I was banned because Hyppo doesn't like me and to try back up what she was doing she actually lied to me about a complaint. Shame, really, it could have just taken over where Dunenovels left off after the exodus, the same people were posting about the same themes. The main reason it has failed is because of that liar Hyppo. The first thread I saw when I started posting there was one she had hijacked where a couple of guys were mocking the new Dunenovels rules in German accents. She waded in and actually said "that's enough!" before droning on about suffering under the Nazis and announcing that the thread was locked until the two people responsible PMd her. She then later announced that the thread was now open again, as the PMs had been received by her from the naughty members responsible. I hadn't and still haven't seen anything quite like that from a moderator. I'm convinced her stomping around on Arrakeen is the highlight of her day.

She's also on Dunenovels, which is a surprise as I don't remember her contributing anything noteworthy or remarkable. Without the big admin stick she's just another background dullard.

Anyway, that aside, Arrakeen is a flop, I've already wasted more effort on the dump than it deserves.

The Herberts are shitting all over Frank's legacy and they banned a bunch of us from their BBS...but a few of you still go there and post.

One admin on Arrakeen goes fairly full-tilt batshit and does some things which (I'm assuming) another admin (like Freak or Crys) could undo and people boycott the forum.

I guess I'm just a little confused by the apparent inconsistency. Or am I missing something?

As far as I'm concerned, there are some differences here, Chig. DN was always the family corp's board. Arrakeen was a fan board. One would assume that clampdowns would happen on a corporate owned board and not on a fan board.

Hyppo's reactions were personal and appeared to me, who received the brunt of it, to be motivated by illogical and constantly changing personal feelings. Byron's may have been sudden, but I think you have acknowledged in the past that you were surprised that you got away with what you got away with for as long as you did.

Some people here have problems with the board in general at Arrakeen. If Hyppo is going to be crazy, then they figure why work so hard to figure the fucking software out? I don't necessarily agree with that, but I can sympathize. And I note that Hyppo does not seem to be doing much to fix the problems, even though she does give lip service every time someone bitches.

Arnoldo is there now. He was not active on DN when you were banned. Hyppo protects him and wants him there. Byron doesn't give a shit.

DN happened first. When Hyppo started turning into a flaming bitch, it was the proverbial last nail in the coffin. Reactions are stronger to her because she knows well what these kind of actions do to online community, since it just happened recently. People blame her personally for DN's and her own sins collectively, and even if that is unfair, she knew what she was doing.

Hyppo tried to come over here just to cause trouble. Why would I want to go back to her board after that? Besides, she is petty enough to try to lord it over me no matter what I do. If I ever get back there, I'm going to do a few things to my account, then get out for good, or at least until Hyppo is no longer an admin.

DN was like crack to me. It was the first board I really ever joined, and it was awesome in its heyday. Arrakeen was not that big to me, though I admit it did fill the void very well for some time. It was not easy for me to quit DN, though now I largely have. With what has happened at Arrakeen, I'm not finding it anywhere near as tough, probably because its not anywhere near as much of an addiction.

Passions are still high right now. Wait for them to die down and see where the opinion lay before attempting to come to any firm conclusions. I may very well go back, though that wench drives me so crazy, in a way that Byron NEVER did, even when he overnight became a Preek.

Its also not clear that Hyppo has changed. For all practical purposes, Byron is no longer banning for stupid stuff. Hyppo, according to the few things I have heard, is still in her little "mood." Why would anyone want to go back there as long as she is calling the shots and is "moody?"

Besides, you've said that you would never go back to DN. Cant you guess that I feel the same way about Arrakeen? And CL too, who was actually banned?

As to what the other admins over there can do, Ill let them comment on that if they want to, as I know nothing about how the board is run. But I suspect that as despite as much common sense as those two guys have, Hyppo makes the calls and that is it. If I'm wrong about that, I'm wrong, and no hard feelings at all. Crys and Freak will ALWAYS be welcome here. But Hyppo did it with out telling them, I think, so what does that tell you?

I tell you one final thing, my friend. When you got banned from DN, no matter the reason, I saw red and I wanted to tear that fucking place apart. As far as I was concerned you were a big part of the heart and soul of that place, and are a big part of the reason why I loved going there. It was never the same after you and Phaedrus and the others got the axe, and it never will be again. I tried to leave DN and never go back, but I was weak, man! Its taken this long to stop caring. Do I go there now? Yes. Only to post on non-Dune things, though. Will I eventually visit Arrakeen, just to see what is up? Maybe. But I'm still a little hot under the collar, so give me a little time here to make up my mind, K?

Besides, the ones who said that they were not going back were either banned, or made their minds up before all this happened.

I guess the way that I was looking at it is, since Arrakeen IS a fan site and Hyppo is NOT the owner, things over there could be turned around, but only if someone with similar clout (ahem) chooses to take action. Or someone complains to Baron?

Ah well, maybe it's just time to cut my losses?

There's a whole world of difference. We were on the HLP's own board trashing their products, I'm just surprised Byron let everyone get away with it for so long. When SC and others were banned and it was made clear that other people were on borrowed time, people just fucked off from the site although some started posting again on there, but nowhere near in the volume that people did before the bannings. I only started posting again on Dunenovels as I felt stifled on Arrakeen, what with being nagged by PM and on the forum by that demented hick Hyppo.

My whole experience of Arrakeen was not particulary a fun one and I can't understand why being banned from an official board for taking the piss out of their "star employee" and cash cow Anderson is anything like being banned or suspended for being disliked by a lunatic member of the admin on an unofficial site. Oh, and being lied to in the reason for the ban. At least Byron was honest when he fired SC's arse out of DN.

As for a boycott, I have no idea if that is happening or not. What about the other members of Arrakeen who aren't on here, why aren't they posting? (That was a rhetorical question, I actually couldn't care less if the site thrives or dies, I just don't like being lied to).

I seem to remember Baron showing up around the end of the year on the threads discussing the boardware over there. The main reason Hyppo gives for not moving the board or basically doing anything else to solve the real problems is that it's Baron's board and his decision, blah blah blah.

I don't know if there's really a boycott going on, but it's deader than I've seen it. Nebiros showed up and posted another of his silly moralistic anti-BG things, asking the opinion of the female members of the board.

I relayed a message from ChiggerBint that he ought to spend less time worrying about other people's sex and go get fucked more himself.

Oh well, I've new forums to play with here tomorrow, so who cares!

I'm about tired of the place and nearly had my own "blaze of glory" moment last week and I think Crys would have been right behind me.
No search tool makes the place practically worthless and the color makes me naseaus, not to mention the drama. It has some sentimental value for me because it was where all the refugees from Dreamers of Dune went when that place went tit's up so I'll try to push for some changes and see if things there get better.

I admit, I wasn't at Arrakeen long enough to get myself worked up over it's imminent demise, but I was really disappointed with the total denial that there was a problem. It didn't take any amount of intelligence to figure out the forum was in trouble. Almost from the day I joined I could tell the forum needed help.

But few seemed to acknowledge these problems and I got the general impression most were writing off complaints as nonsense, particularly Hyppo. She seemed totally oblivious to everything and when I'd post concerns, she'd give the internet equivalent of a blank stare. She'd ask I fully explain my concerns, as if she had no clue or as though my original posts were somehow indecipherable. Then I'd spend an hour writing a 1,500 word essay at a grade 5 level to help explain only for the whole post to be ignored.

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. By the time arnoldo had been invited and/or permitted to join, the writing was on the wall. A pity for certain, the forum could have been fun.

Well, she's deleted several of my comments, calling them "spam", and sent me one of her PMS. I considered emailing Baron when I was on my rampage last night, but figured if he's too busy to be active, he's probably not terribly concerned, so why bother him.

I'm sure there's a lot there that's interesting that I haven't come across yet (but good luck finding it!), but if participating there means having to deal with Her Highness The Regent, I think I'll pass from now on.

A few complaints I have include:
Making the word "troll" spam is just ridiculous.
Locking down threads because she didn't like the discussion is out-of-line as well IMHO.
Telling people to be nice and then running around and posting "snarky" (I hate that fucking word BTW) comments--IOW, the "are you wearing the admin hate or not" complaint.
Telling people not to post anything about 'Keen elsewhere but railing on dunenovels is a huge double standard.
Banning chanilover and Omphalos (while letting that pathetic little troll arnie continue).
Deleting posts.
Deleting the banner that Omphalos had the 36,000 post cuz she was angry that day.

Those are just a few of the complaints I have.....

For the record, I think Freak and I are squarely on the same side. I can't stand Hyp anymore. Freak and I have had a few conversations about her going back at least a year.

In my own case, about 8 months ago I requested to be demoted to a mod position(or regular member) so I didn't have to deal with her crap anymore, but I was talked out of it. I just see her as the senior Admin, but that doesn't mean I agree with her. I've voiced my concerns with her but nothing seems to sink into her thick head. I know who she is in RL, and I think she has nothing better to do.

I've sent emails to Baron without any response, so he's either given up, never checks his emails, or he's dead, who knows? The only other options are to take the board by force, or ask Hyp to step down. I just haven't made a decision yet, if I even want to. I'm not to the point of letting it die, but I'm close.

Arnoldo is her pet project now, it seems. She wants to reform him.

He's really trying harder now to fit in, yet all we do is greet his every effort with abuse and insults.

I came up with a list of four people that I have devoted special attention to: Byron, Arnoldo, Nebiros, and Martian Bob. I told her that none of them are at Arrakeen because they wish the site well, especially the first two.

The only other person I can remember being less than pleasant to was ARCH back a few months ago when she was whining on and on about her language and culture being endangered. I realize the people there have been through hell and back, but her post read, to me, like she was thinking of giving up on everything. To be blunt about it, she reminded me of SeruK anus when he was doing his suicide routine. So I kinda told her to lay down and die or do something to preserve what she thought was being lost. (I think I suggested making babies.) That got a PM from her Highness as well.

At this point, I'm not particularly bothered either way. I haven't put in as much time over on Arrakeen as I did on DN. Getting kicked off a sinking ship could actually be viewed as a kindness almost.

But you gotta love her new avatar, no? To die for.

As for the rest... I expected Crysknife wouldn't be able to keep from telling you. But when Staff members make threats to hijack the board away from other Staff (specifically the Staff member who actually does most of the work), that justifies taking steps to know what is going on. And Baron has been informed -- by me.

Don't get so high-horse, SandChigger. I am aware of everything that's publicly readable at Omphalos' forum and I have seen Bijaz' garbage at your 'hoary tales' blog. I know about the talk of 'can't Crysknife and Freakzilla just take the board away from me, or talk Baron into kicking me out...' The support forums are full of stories similar to this, where some members have turned against other members, the Staff get involved, and next thing you know, the board is trashed. Well, I have no intention of allowing that to happen here. You have your places where you can do what you want, insult and attack people, post all kinds of profanity and gutter filth. Why do you feel the need to turn Arrakeen into that kind of place as well?

Yeah, she only told me AFTER I mentioned that she should tell Baron to kiss my ass for handing out private emails(something Hyp has gotten mad at when others do it to her). I told her I would tell Baron that personaly. She then told me she opened the email on her own. I told her that I hope she respects other people in the future.

When is Hyp ever wrong?

BTW Hyp, you can do all the work you want on a board, but if you're a total tyrant, none of that work matters. You jump on everything! It amazes me that you have enough time in the day to reply to so many mundane and petty offenses.

I have no intention of joining more forums Mandy. My post was mostly to communicate the point to a known lurker.

As for Arrakeen, I've left. With the exception of responding to Ompf's private message, I haven't been back there since my final post sometime in November I believe it was. I will not be going back and I encourage others who have had enough to do the same. Trust me, you'll feel better leaving that moron and her website in the gutter she has dug for it.

I could set up a user group where all the newbies get funnelled to join the fray, but only those 20 or so of us who are here now have access to these parts of the forums.

I think I would have to change the name of the fourm again too, so people who stumble across it in a google result know what it is.

I really like the idea of having it here, but at the same time, there is a big chance of this place changing in character if I open it up for just any old scallywag to join. I personally LOVE this place the way it is now, so if this is gonna happen, Id want to think of some way to protect this.

Of course, if we set up a new forum for FH and Dune, then I can keep this one locked down for the OH and we can discuss all the weird little preeks here.

Also, there is a certain pride in ownership, as they say. Maybe if a bunch of us are gonna band together to get this done, we should set up a new forum so that not just I own it. Something to think about.

I really don't think the internet needs yet another Dune forum, it's already stretched too thin. What is needed is a Dune forum which treats its members like adults, rather than naughty little children.

I realy think this place should be it. Open it up but, like Omfartlos said, restrict access to certain parts of it to the invitation-only crew, with the riff-raff only having access to the rest of the forum. The name really should be Jacurutu. I'm sure plenty of Dune fans look that name up on Google to work out what it means. Arrakeen has been killed off by the Hick, this place is perfect to take over. Fuck it, why don't you guys just copy some of the threads from Arrakeen and move them here once you've set up the riff-raff section to get things going. You already have the most active and knowledgeable Dune posters here, and me.

Sounds like we have a good start on a plan. If we do it here, I really like the idea of the select usergroups with different permissions. Keep sections as selective members only, and then others that are open and free for discussion.

Jacurutu sounds like a great name too! And it should be substantially less censored than the "other" forums.

I would be interested in being an admin or moderator also. I've never done it, but I'm certain I could get up to speed pretty quickly.

But do we really do that much Dune discussion here apart from related internet drama? We could encourage the non-Dune discussion to go here somehow. I really don't want to cause this place to die down. I think this would still be a great club house for the OHs and friends.

I just want a dedicated Dune forum where you aren't censored beyond reason, plus I've always wanted to do one myself to enhance my personal Dune knowledge.

But do we really do that much Dune discussion here apart from related internet drama? We could encourage the non-Dune discussion to go here somehow. I really don't want to cause this place to die down. I think this would still be a great club house for the OHs and friends.

I just want a dedicated Dune forum where you aren't censored beyond reason, plus I've always wanted to do one myself to enhance my personal Dune knowledge.

I know. Im just thinking out loud. I will be a part of both for sure. And Im sure this one wont dry up and go away. Im just voicing something I dont want to happen, but Im sure it wont.

You know though, Ive played with the idea of putting up more Dune content for two months now, and did not do it because 1) I wanted somehting more general; and 2) I was sure someone else was going to do it, cause Keen and DN just were not cutting the mustard. I kind of expected this, and I think its a great idea.

Well, whatever is decided, let's make this next forum jump at least semi-permanent. I for one am becoming very tired of joining a new Dune forum every few months. This next one has to stick.

Why do you people want yet another Dune forum when you've already got one here? I can't be arsed checking out two or three Dune sites when it can all be here under one roof. Just build on this site, and have different forums for different sci fi stuff, one for Dune and other for whatever other geeky shit people are into.
