Test for Dementia

Post by Freakzilla »

Below are four (4) questions and a bonus question. You have to answer them instantly. You can't take your time, answer all of them immediately . OK?

Let's find out just how clever you really are....

First Question:

You are participating in a race. You overtake the second person.

What position are you in?

Answer: If you answered that you are first, then you are
absolutely wrong! If you overtake the second person and you take his place, you are second!

Try not to screw up next time.
Now answer the second question,
but don't take as much time as you took for the first question, OK ?

Second Question:
If you overtake the last person, then you are...?

Answer: If you answered that you are second to last, then you are wrong again. Tell me, how can you overtake the LAST Person?

You're not very good at this, are you?

Third Question:
Very tricky arithmetic! Note: This must be done in your head only .
Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator. Try it.

Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000 . Now add 30.
Add another 1000 . Now add 20 . Now add another 1000 Now add 10 . What is the total?

Did you get 5000?

The correct answer is actually 4100.

If you don't believe it, check it with a calculator!
Today is definitely not your day, is it?
Maybe you'll get the last question right....
Maybe.

Fourth Question:

Mary's father has five daughters: 1. Nana, 2. Nene, 3. Nini,
4. Nono. What is the name of the fifth daughter?

Did you Answer Nunu?
NO! Of course it isn't.
Her name is Mary.! Read the question again!

Okay, now the bonus round:

A mute person goes into a shop and wants to buy a toothbrush. By
imitating the action of brushing his teeth he successfully
expresses himself to the shopkeeper and the purchase is
made.
Next, a blind man comes into the shop who wants to buy a pair of
sunglasses; how does HE indicate what he wants?

He just has to open his mouth and ask...
It's really very simple.... Like you!

Me too. Your brain gets to 4,090, sees the next 10, and just farts up to 5,000 instead of 4,100. The mistake is made in that last addition. Up until then, you were probably correct.

Yeah, I did the exact same thing.

Same here. There's some sort of perceptual glitch we're getting tripped up on, sort of the numerical equivalent of an optical illusion.

The others were ridiculously easy though.

Very clever. :P

But what does this have to do with dementia?

Well...

My mom sent it to me and her aunt had dementia.

Best I can do, sorry.

Dementia by proxy. That's two disorders in one!

Look, I'm not much good at big speeches, and I know I haven't always been an easy guy to get on with, and I know, that given the choice, I wouldn't have chosen you as friends, but I just want to say, that over the years, I have come to regard you as people I met.

My mom has it. Apparently these types of questions help to pinpoint the disease, but as we can see from our own performance, maybe not the best questions! Or we're all demented!! ;)

There are lots of other tests though. Simple, everyday things become confusing. One of the tests my mom was given was to draw the face of a clock on a piece of paper, at some specified time. She ended up writing the numbers 1 through 20 around the outside, with no hands at all. Seems the current date and time of day are particularly hard things to remember for people with dementia.

No one in my family, either side, has had it that we know of, so I guess I don't think about it that often, as something real affecting real people. :(

(Of course, on my mother's side, which I take after, we tend to kick off early, mid-to-late sixties. And while my father died early of TB, on that side they usually have to nail us in still screaming.)

How long since she was diagnosed? (If that's not too intrusive.)

About nine months ago.

It's a sucky way to go. In some ways it's worse than Alzheimer's, although with Dementia the downward curve is slightly shallower. Still, there's things me and my sibs find to laugh about, sometimes at mom's expense, but she's a real good sport about it. In a way, though, there's some things that have me intrigued. Most people would think that losing your ememory would suck (well, it would lol), but with my mom each thing is like the first time, to some extent. We took her to Wendy's after a Doctor's appointment for a Frosty. It was the best ice cream she ever had (despite the 9,000 other Frosty's she's had in the past). Same thing at Steak & Shake - best burger she ever had! We (sibs) kind of catch each other's eyes and grin. Gotta be carefull where you set things down around mom, though. If she puts it away, all bets are off. Watch your car keys!!!!

In truth, that's really the worst of it so far. Forgetting things. She still remembers our names and her friends names, etc., and is highly functional, living on her own in the same house we were all raised in. So it's not all drool and acting batshit like some people would have you believe.

Thanks for sharing that. I'm really sorry.

My mom died in a traffic accident fourteen years ago come the end of this month. She would have been 76 the day before yesterday, as a matter of fact. I sometimes wonder what her mental condition would be like now if she were still alive. If she had developed a similar problem, I would have had to return to the States to take care of her because I certainly couldn't have relied on my PoS sister to do it. (She was the driver.)

Of course, Mom was a bit of loon (it's genetic), so we might not have been able to tell. ;)

Missed the first one. The others I got correct expect the first thing that popped in my head about the sunglasses is why would a blindman want a pair of shades?

Can I blame it on a lack of sleep?

Oh, and sorry to hear about the family who suffered through dementia. It's hard to see someone you love fall from what they use to be.
