Hmmm.

I know it's been at least 30 years since I read that. They do end up doing it, if I remember correctly.

Oh. My. G-d.

I hate this horseshit on so many levels, by eyes are bleeding ...

first off, the modern-day setting will ruin any actual political/economic points
the silly Russian bitch made in the novel - Rand's paranoia for the future made some
sense and was plausible in in the early fifties when she started the book, but were
already questionable (and, in some circles, laughable) by publication in 57 ... and
one of the (few) appealing points of the novel IS the setting of a post WWII America
driven to economic ruin by meddling socialist government bureaucrats ... steel mills
and railway lines ? what fucking country is THIS ?

number two, as corporatist, consumerist, money-grubbing propaganda, ATLAS SHRUGGED
fucked up the thinking of my generation more than any other single thing (for those who
actually read it) by making the "greed is good" philosophy MORAL ....

and combining the two, how are these fucktards going to deal with the analogy of all
the cigarettes in the novel ? according to Dagney, smoking tobacco is a positive,
economically moral thing to do (consumerist society) - I'll suppose that whole metaphor
than runs thru the entire novel will be discarded, or a "modern" substitute will be applied,
and it won't make any real sense ...

now, as a novel, as a piece of creative fiction, ATLAS SHRUGGED is pretty good;
not great, it goes on waaaay too long in stretches, and some of Rand's political
diatribes disguised as character dialog make God-Emperor look like Frank Herbert's
Twitter, and the Super-Hero ending of the business-tycoons and Captain Nemo storming
the nazi bunker and freeing a naked Dagney from the Tesla-coil torture device pretty
much destroyed any credibility as a serious work of literature, but for the most part,
the writing itself is very good; the character description is good, but I think that
has more to do with the length - after 1000+ pages, you should have a firm image
of these people in your mind; but as far as the other meaning of "character development",
the evolution of a character's "character" over the course of the novel, it's a
huge fucking fail, up there in the tehKJA range; Dagney Taggart is the same person
from the age of twelve when she got molested by Zorro all the way to the end ... Hank
(and all the characters) are so convinced they are correct in their thinking, they would
never DREAM of changing, or questioning their moral bases (which is why this isn't
really a novel, but propaganda ....)

oh shit, and what about the scene where Hank gives Dagney the bracelet of Rearden
Metal, which "gave her the most feminine of all aspects: the look of being chained."
that shit ain't gonna fly in 2011, and certainly not if the movie is set in a "modern" age ...

I'll assume this movie will not resemble the book in any manner but basic plot-line;
even as simple as Rand's political ideas were (I'll get mine, you get yours) I
doubt modern-day Hollywood scriptwriters could translate any of that to film, if they
in fact understood any of it to begin with, so this is going to be an action-adventure
campy high-drama romance, with a few twisted and meaningless pseudophilosophical
speeches from Dagney & Gault that will SOUND smart and important, but upon parsing
will prove to be gibberish (like most of the novel itself, come to think of it ...)

also then, it's imperative to keep this in mind: one of the Randian Acolytes of her
Objectivist Salons in the early 1960s was a bright young mind named Greenspan;
this formidable brain ended up in control of the American Federal Economy (and thus
the world) for quite a stretch, and applied many of the ideas tossed about in that
Den of Inequity to the Real World ... which led to some the most spectacular economic
cock-ups in human history, some of which will be pondered by future bright young minds
for generations to come, and, if you'll dig around in some of the transcripts of speeches
and talks given by Greenspan in the years since he relinquished control of all the world's
paper money, he has been quietly but forcefully repudiating and apologizing for.

I like how this film started out with Angelina Jolie and Dagny, Russel Crowe as Rearden, Brad Pitt as Galt and an absolutely nenormous budget... and now it's a $5M straight-to-dvd job with a few TV actors... :P
And that, children, is how the little bunny rabbit got his fluffy white tail.

As a minimum, we must demand from SF that it be wiser than the world it speaks to.

Not to mention the bad timing with all of the accusations that started floating around that she may have been receiving government aid :lol=:

This movie is doomed. I'll put it right up there with Kirk Cameron's Left Behind movies which were also never seen by anyone.

not to say that Rand wasn't a deep thinker, or entirely wrong, of course;
she just seems to've went totally fucking nuts right around the end of WWII,
before she really began writing, and just took her ideas to the extreme ...
(and you fremen know where a path followed precisely to its end leads ...)

like everything else, you have to be careful to place a person's work in the
context of their time & place ... Rand's family was upper middle-class White
Russians ... she was an eye-witness to the Revolution ... the Reds stole all
her stuff & chased them out of the country ... so she began with a deep,
ingrained hatred for "the Left" and all their ideas .... the Communists destroyed
her world and ruined her childhood ... therefore, anything remotely related MUST
be evil and bad for the world in general; she also became a radical absolutist -
you are either an Individualist or a Collectivist, and these are always at odds
and fatal to each other ....

I think I've read all her "novels" over the years - would have to check a list
to see what minor ones I might've missed; I've actually read ATLAS SHRUGGED
straight thru three time in my life - my favorite, and the only one I actually
recommend is her first, We, The Living; it is about a young, above-average
intelligent and stunningly beautiful girl during the 1917 Russian Revolution ...

by itself, it's not a bad read at all, and there's not alot of novels about the
White Russian POV around ... as an insight into Rand's POV of the world and
history, and the impact this had on her philosophy, it's invaluable ...

and even you casual students of history should see what happened here and why ....

during the 30s & early 40s, while America was experimenting with Leftist government
as a response and possible solution to the complete ass-fucked-left-on-the-highway-for-dead
position the Robber Barons from the Last Century had raped & pillaged the national
economy into, Rand wasn't paid much attention, and she was also just starting to
establish her credentials; after the war and the onset of the Cold War w/ Russia,
the anti-Roosevelt-Left backlashers, the Red Menace paranoids, and the defectors
of the right-leaning Southern Democrats to a the resurgent Republican party began
to dominate the national discussions; Rand was a great spokesperson for McCarthyism -

here was a person, a woman, who obviously had the intellectual gifts to talk fucking
circles around anyone in the room, a domineering personality that demanded you finally
agree with her and accept her statements or quietly slip out on the balcony and shoot
yourself in the head (leaning over the rail, please, no reason to put the servants out
by having to clean-up your blood and brains) ....

and not only was she a vicious Anti-Communists, she had cred AND gravitas in that
debate - she was there ... the filthy Red Horde stormed into her father's nice house
in St Petersburg and burned all his books and stole her mother's silverware and broke
the lid off her jewelry box and trampled their little dog to death ...

(CF modern situation, when the government trots out another "moderate" Arab
in exile, with horror stories and pleas for the US Marines to "save" his country ...)

in 57, the bulk and complicated nature of ATLAS SHRUGGED cemented her reputation
in the Right Wing, whether or not anyone had read the book - it's goddamn long,
there's alot of crazy shit in there, Joe-Bob read it, he sorta explained some of it
to me ...
by the mid-sixties, it was already sort of an "underground" classic, even
among the Lefties - simply because of the range of economic & political philosophy -
something to smoke some grass and talk about all night ...

but even by then, & just before, by the time of the Berkeley Free Speech Movement,
Rand had taken the whole "Objectivist" philosophy to an extreme bordering on a Religion,
and, as with most philosophies, as ideas on paper, to be discussed & pondered,
some of it was interesting - as a practical plan to implement, as a basis for a functioning
society, it was, of course, bullshit ...

I don't know that I've ever expounded in depth to y'all my Diatribe on Ayn Rand;
this is part of it, the salient points, anyway ... I'd thought quite awhile back about
throwing bits and pieces of it at the asswipes @Fed2K ... if I recall, that was where I
ran into some "NeoObjectivists" .... college-age kids who had read ATLAS SHRUGGED
for the first time, and were profoundly influenced - because of the radical-ness of
the ideas to them, and the bold, self-assured manner in which they were presented ...

which was Rand's biggest asset - as I said above, that woman could talk circles around
Bill Clinton and bully you into agreeing, and make the case so obvious to you, at the
time, in the heat of the debate, that disagreeing with her not only seemed wrong, it
seemed immoral and evil ....

>> :[Primary Point]
>> {rem} (hello, thing. How're ya?)
>> IF ALSO (tl;dr) THEN GOTO >> :[EndPoint]

but my main point is this - Ayn Rand can only be properly understood as an
HISTORICAL FOOTNOTE - her "value" to today's society can only be found
in understanding her personal biography, how that influenced her writings, and the
way she was used by a political faction in an historical political struggle, and the
way she used those people for her own advancement and satisfaction of ego ...

she is a case study in the mechanisms of political philosophers & politicians;
in general terms, her political & economic philosophies are straight Old-School
Free Market Capitalism, with nothing of value whatsoever added to the already-
existing framework, still best & most clearly stated in The Wealth of Nations ...

in specific and detailed terms, most (if not all) of the minute points and examples
put forth in Objectivism are not only not applicable to "modern" society &
economies, they were not applicable when she wrote and spoke them, and most
(if not all) are actually provably erroneous and dangerous to "stable societies" ....

so what I believe I am saying is that Rand is "style over substance", in a way ...
it was her presentation of these radical ideas that made her stand out and won
people to her side; she would begin in general "Commies are Evil and Here's Why" terms,
and was very good at that, and had a place during the Cold War in the national discussion;

if she'd've stopped there, she would have been a precursor to Jeane Kirkpatrick;
(who agreed with most of the points I've made here about Rand, BTW)
but that was not enough for her; she delved into the basic, primary causes ...
and developed a system of thought she believed would result in the emergence of
the type of society they all had agreed was optimum ... except the system was
an obvious practical failure ...

yet Rand's forcefulness and self-righteous conviction, the very attributes
that had just served her so well, caused her to appear more and more
to the Establishment Types as a total fucking wingnut ... until finally, she was
left alone in her New York apartment salon with Alan Greenspan ... where she did
horrible and unspeakable things to the poor man; things that still plague his dreams,
and wake him in the dead of night, sweaty and screaming, causing Andrea Mitchell
to bolt upright in her separate bed clutching her snub-nosed .38 ... What? What?
Oh, goodlord. Shut the fuck up, you miserable old cocksucker. I gotta go to work
in the morning...

it seems that every 7-and-a-half years or so, something comes along to (momentarily)
bring Rand back into the public consciousness ... the last thing I remember was the
Helen Mirriam movie ... and it wasn't so much about Rand's life or work as it was how
she fucked who she wanted to fuck when & how she wanted to fuck them, as a part
of her never-too-described-in-detail "philosophy" ... so, you know, I gave it thumbs-up
just for that ... also, I really, really like Peter Fonda, as a person and a Public Figure,
and I also really, really enjoy watching him totally fail as an actor (I'm not sure why;
his father, while not one of my favorites, was still a monumental presence in movies
during my lifetime; and I love Jane more than I can express, as an actor, political figure,
and sex kitten (still; woman's ten years older than me, and I'd still ... well, I wouldn't
do much, I guess ... we'd get nekkid and roll around a little, and then I'd say something
FTA and she'd start telling me a story about getting arrested on Okinawa ...)

wait, what ?

anyway, that, and to lesser degree the USPS stamp thing, but atleast that was in a
series of other "literary" figures and not just honoring her (individually; which made
her roll in her grave, I'd assumed ... to be "collectively" honored; of course, as I've
said, her "literary" merits are lacking for me personally, but I can see where some
would hold her in higher esteem in that regard - but I don't think she really belongs
in a series of Federal Commemorative Postal Stamps with Steinbeck & Faulkner &
Hemingway & T.S. Eliot .... not that I give a fuck who the Federal Union puts on
their mail-tax stamps, or am ever surprised at any decision they make on anything ..)

so her name gets tossed around again, and the media attaches adjectives that may
or may not be accurate ... and as the media's knowledge-base gets shallower and
shallower and their "reporting" becomes more & more like 4chan copypasta, I hate
to see anything roll out that gets that started again ...

f'instance .... in a random group of 20 americans standing around talking at a
wedding reception, I'd say it would be a safe bet to place the percentage of
those people who have actually read ATLAS SHRUGGED at Zero ...(but for the
sake of this f'instance, I'll put the actual number at ONE person to've read the
book) ... maybe half have heard of the book, and maybe a few of those
are vaguely aware of who Rand was ...

but toss in a movie, and the numbers rise - and THANK YOU BABY JESUS AND THE
GOATS IN THE MANGER
that the "blockbuster" thing fell thru ... wasn't even fucking
AWARE of that bullshit ... and Thank the Maker it is just going to be DVD, that
will lessen the chance of random people wandering into a theatre and seeing it by
mistake ... the DVDs will be bought by interested parties; randoms who stumble
across it later this fall in the $3 bin @the HEB will not feel obliged to watch the
whole thing, and click it off after the first 15 minutes or so ... and "PART ONE", eh?
from the trailer, this one only gets up to Dagney's disappearance ... I guess you
could squeeze all the rest into just one more equal-length movie ... if that ever
gets made - or did they shoot a whole bunch of stuff already and are waiting
to see the reaction to this one before they edit the ending ?
... but, I digress ...

let's say it was an actual blockbuster under discussion here (And Thank the Maker
it is Not, Bless Him and His Water, shaihulud-akbar, Bless His Coming and His Going,
May He swallow Hollywood whole like a Harkonen Spice Harvester and turn His Rings
towards Austin, a-men ...); Rand's name would've been bandied about, with research
from Wikipedia or worse; people who have never read her and had not really heard of
her until reading the BigTimeMovie Studio's press release will attach adjectives like
"visionary" & "influential" & "philosophical giant" & so forth ...

seeping into the public consciousness, until our group at the wedding reception
(you remember them ? this here's a story about a wedding reception ...)
turns in casual conversation to entertainment & celebrity gossip ... someone
mentions this (fictional) movie ... those who were uniformed before have by now
heard about the novel, its length & complexity, and its "influence" on politics and
economics, (and someone somewhere, being almost a little smarter than the other
trained manatees doing research for media outlets will have run across the Alan
Greenspan connection and that will have been mentioned, out of context, and with
no allusions to Mr Greenspan's current opinion ...)

our single person who HAS read the book will say so ... he might say how incredible
and intriguing it was, how it profoundly changed his outlook on life &etc (as some of
us have, standing in a similar group, and somehow Frank's Dune has surfaced)

from the media propaganda, and esp from Right-leaning outlets like FOXNews,
the serious intellectual weight on politics & economics that will have been given
to ATLAS SHRUGGED, along with all the comments on its length, complexity and
"depth" will transfer itself to the single reader of this book in the group, and
his esteem will be elevated; they will regard him more seriously, listen more
closely to what he says and be more inclined to believe him, because, in this
Shallow Age of simple books and simple Moving Pictures for simple people, this
person had consumed a book all the media have described as "difficult, deep,
influential" ... "masterpiece" & even possibly "genius" ... therefore, this person
must also be a "deep thinker" ....

but of course, to me (started to type "someone like me", but I don't know who that'd be)
this would be a Red Flag of DefCon Two, a Terrorist Alert Level of Burnt Umber, &etc.
and I would do one of two things, depending on how cheap the bride's father was;
(well, not accurate, either - I do not attend wedding receptions w/ cash bars ... just don't ... won't go ... no.)

marking this person for future reference as an Asshat, possibly a ShitHeel, and most
certainly a registered Republican, and quietly excuse myself from the group to go look
for bridesmaids to molest; or, I might engage the debate ... depending on how much I
like or dislike the person, I may just light into his bitch-ass quicker than George Jones
getting into his first bottle of breakfast bourbon ... or, if I don't really want to embarrass
them or get myself kicked out for being an asshole, I may ask some loaded questions
about the basics of Objectivism, leading him down the Garden Path, which ends at the
Fountain of What-The-Fuck-?, and the little blooming plots of That-Don't-Make-No-Sense
bordered by the wild desirable-volunteers, varieties of Looks-Good-on-Paper and
Corporate-Propaganda ....

>> :[End Point]

>> {rem}(oh, hi again, Thing; yes, I know, the last bit got tl;dr as well ...)

not applicable to any modern situation and the setting is not transferable
to a Modern Age

>> Ayn Rand's base political & economic philosophical ideas are Old-School FreeMarket Capitalism

That was hilarious. What language is that emulating, 'Rider? FORTRAN? COBOL?

Edited to add: after reading all that, I'm actually intrigued enough to read the novel (haven't read any Rand, nor planned to, but now I'm intrigued. Particularly if it means I can be the One Guy on Fox News. Or maybe I misunderstood that bit).
but of course, to me (started to type "someone like me", but I don't know who that'd be)
Me either. And I mean that in a good way.

Reading it does make you evil for a few months afterwards, bit FWIW I really enjoyed the audiobook (all 50 hours of it) (even if it did take me a few attempts to get through the big speech at the end). I also listened to The Fountainhead, which I think I enjoyed slightly more - although that might have been because I was building architectural models at the time.

:)

(Going to make sure I get to that beastly chunk of 'rider in due course..)
And that, children, is how the little bunny rabbit got his fluffy white tail.

As a minimum, we must demand from SF that it be wiser than the world it speaks to.

Reading it does make you evil for a few months afterwards,
very true .... the book is so long, the story-line so tightly-woven, you cannot
help but become sympathetic to the characters, and unless your own Moral Value
Base is solid, you will find yourself swayed by Rand's hokum ... which is why young
people, esp. young pseudo-intellectual college students, should not read this book ...

as much as I despise the insidious effect it had on the weak-minded asshats
of My G-G-G-Generation (culminating in national insanity & the embrace of "Reganomics")
I do have a soft spot for it as a story .... I use to have a long attention-span,
before TeeVee reduced my it to

I actually re-read that whole post - and fuck me for sounding vain, but I'm pleased ...
THAT is perfect prose, asshat pickle-fucker - that was typed in one go, off the top
of my head, with no editing .... and while it would gain much from some editing for
clarity of My Point, whatever that was, it would also then lost the ART of the
Wandering Diatribe .... y'all notice that I DO wander off in those long posts, but
ALWAYS manage to return ? even if you've forgotten WTF I was talking about, and
are as lost as Dick Cheney's Soul ?

dat's cauz I'm GOOD, yo ....

I should get a Pulitzer for this paragraph alone:
yet Rand's forcefulness and self-righteous conviction, the very attributes
that had just served her so well, caused her to appear more and more
to the Establishment Types as a total fucking wingnut ... until finally, she was
left alone in her New York apartment salon with Alan Greenspan ... where she did
horrible and unspeakable things to the poor man; things that still plague his dreams,
and wake him in the dead of night, sweaty and screaming, causing Andrea Mitchell
to bolt upright in her separate bed clutching her snub-nosed .38 ... What? What?
Oh, goodlord. Shut the fuck up, you miserable old cocksucker. I gotta go to work
in the morning...

I started to read The Sword of Truth series, a derivative/formulaic high fantasy series written by Terry Goodkind, a Randian acolyte. I probably read more of the series than I should have, but I did eventually punt before finishing. Anyway, this stuff was so infuriating that I was inspired to research Goodkind's background, which in turn led me to Rand. Dear fucking lord, NO THANKS!! I guess Obectivism is great for thosexwho don't require accountability. Other than that, what a wack-job. HOWEVER, before totally and completely writing her off, I do admit that I should probably read her magnum opus.

I used to love Goodkind's books when I was a kid, they were just decent fantasy fare, but eventually I couldn't ignore his preaching and crazy ideas, and how he gets so repetitive in trying to pound his opinions into your head. The guy's a loser, like a real grade A loser.

If you thought DN was bad, you should see his official fan forum, they aren't even allowed to talk about other authors, or to basically having anything other than really "serious" conversations, because his books are "serious business", not really even fantasy in his opinion (what a nut).
I deleted some of your posts because they were derailing the topic and not focusing on the issues asked, and instead going after the authors or their material. That's why. ~ BM

Looking back over this thread I think I'm going to have to pick up this book at some time, if only in an attempt to more fully understand The SandRider's work.

Well ... I suppose the same ludicrous "philosophy" is preached in the book as it is in the movie ... so, no thanks.
