Unless they've updated that PDF, there are a lot of scan errors (or typos?). (Search for "Cenva" vs "Cevna" for example, IIRC.)
I get burned out reading stuff on screen. (Nothing beats a REAL book! ) So I recently splurged and bought a copy from one of the Amazon resellers; was about $50, I think. Probably could have gotten it cheaper on eBay, but didn't feel like the hasSle.
I love old books.

The pdf has not been cleaned up. For example, "mehtats." Kind of makes searching a bit of a bitch, but it is an expensive book for free. I got mine for a song on Amazon a long time ago, before the Doonsey-Twins started befouling the Earth with prequels.

Cool, I didn't know that was online.
My Dune Encyclopedia story:
I used to own a Book Club edition of this book when I was a teenager. I got many many hours of enjoyment from reading it.
Then in my mid-20's I went through a sort of "slump" period of a few years when I wasn't too interested in reading, I just had other things going on in my life, and I sold a lot of my books, some of them on ebay, including this one.
Mind you, at the time I had absolutely NO idea this was a rare book. I was amazed when it fetched me around $75!
Now, of course, I curse myself for letting it go.

I have a sad story like that too. I had a copy of Octavia Butler's Survivor in paperback. I sold it at a yard sale for a quarter. Last year when I was going back to review all the books in her Patternist series, including Survivor, I learned that after the first edition she disclaimed the book and bought all the rights back so it would never be published again. Thus far I have found it for $600 on the book finder services I use.

I think that is true.tanzeelat wrote:I have a first edition hardback of the Dune Encyclopedia. Not a book club edition, a proper first edition hardback - although I believe the trade paperback beat into print by a month or two.

One thing I think is interesting about this book is that it is intended as fiction.
Or looked at another way, the book is "in character" with the DC. That is,
the "writers" of the DE were historians in the Duniverse. For example, the
entry for Paul Atreides (or was it Muad'dib) is intentionally inaccurate
compared to the novels. The DE rejects the notion of Paul Atreides being
Muad'dib because surely no 15 year old could have ever risen to topple the
Corino throne. etc etc
I just think that's neat-o burrito!
