Here is my current desktop:

Image

To do this (with windows):

1. Close all open programs on your desktop;
2. Press the "print screen" button. Nothing may happen, or your arrow/cursor may blink once;
3. Open up Paint in the Accessories menu;
4. Type ctrl-v, and the pic should populate the open, blank document;
5. Using the "Image" link on top, go to "Stretch and Skew" and resize it to fit in an average bbs window (50% - 60% for height and width should do);
6. Save it;
7. Post it to PhotoBucket;
8. Get the <img> link and post it here!

Hey, me too, man! I have my son and my daughter both saying "That's a very cool space ship, Daddy!" whenever I show it to them. I'm indoctrinating them to SF early!

Is that robot from some movie that is coming up soon? It reminds me of Number Five, from that silly Steve Guttenberg movie from the 80's. Short Circuit or something.

Yeah, it's Wall-e from the new Pixar movie coming out this year. It's all my girls talk about. My little 3 year old walks around the house saying WALLE! In that cute robot voice they have on the trailers.

They demand watching em online at least once every two days. I can't wait till this one is over. Too bad Hanna Montana will just age with them! :? :? :?

Ehh, scratch that, I do enjoy these things. :) The movie looks pretty good. I guess I better savor these moments....they won't be young forever.

Well, with my daughter I'm still into tea parties, tiarras and Madeline. The boy, Power Rangers, Digimon, Lego and Matchbox rule his world.

Sometimes I feel like I'm drowning in a sea of pink frilly things, and plastic DVD cases. And if I see another lip gloss with glitter in it I'm going to screem.

Yeah, that's what I had in mind. :D

I have a folder of more than 70 images, mostly Celestia screenshots that I've made or swiped from their forum galleries, that the system choses a new desktop from every half hour. Here's a reduced version of what's up now:

Image

Supposed to be Mars in the process of being terraformed. I colored in a few areas of a copy of the Mars texture in the Celestia resources and then zoomed around until I found a view that I liked.

Not very realistic (I didn't bother trying to do anything with the atmosphere, for example, trying to add the haze and spare cloud cover that would no doubt exist with open water), but I like it.

Maybe I should send a copy to Mad Martian Bob? ;)

That is cool, Chig! Celestia, the program is called? Is it freeware? You just hook it up and put in pics and it rotates through them all day? I personally would love that. I have a bunch of AOPD pics at home that I cycle through on my own.

Omph, he's probably using an option on his Mac which lets you select a file of pics and can randomly change the pics at a set time Starting at 5 seconds and up. I change mine randomly every minute :D

Aren't we, though?

My macbook is acting funny at the moment, though. It's current "desktop" is a funny folder image with a question mark on it. Oddly, I never logged in, I just turned the machine on, and that's what's there.

Honestly, I have about as much trouble with my Mac as I've had with Windows machines in the past. The only difference is that I haven't taken the time to learn the arcane secrets of Unix, so I have no idea why the Mac does these strange things. With Windows, I usually have a pretty good idea.

Um...is it OK now?

You do know that's the "Screen of (Potential) Disk Death", right? Exactly what my friend found himself looking at like a day or two after New Years. It means the computer can't find your System Folder. :(

His disk died and he hadn't been doing backups. Lost a year's worth of mail and all. Evidently, there's a lot of problems with the disks in the first batches of the new MacBooks. (Which is why I'm looking at the new ultrathin ones with a solid state disk as a replacement for my current PB, the screen on which is going wonky.)

I do hope it's OK now. :(

No moving parts, so nothing mechanical to break down in that respect. :D

I haven't read up on them yet, but my impression is that they're essentially a version of flash memories/memory sticks.

Yeah, I know what it is. I can't seem to find my OS X install discs, so I can't try to boot from them and see if I can fix it.

I don't like the Macbook Air things. They scare me(seems so easy to break!), and besides, to me, portable means thinner as in length, not as in depth. Screw the full size keyboard, the normal Macbooks are thin enough!

If the disk is dead, I'm not too worried, other than the colossal amounts of music I'll be losing. That makes me sad, as I've been planning to back it all up for a couple weeks now. Hopefully, something silly just happened and it'll all be alright, though. Now, to find those install discs..

If the system installer and Disk Utility (you can start it up from a menu in the installer) don't show the disk at all, it's probably fooked. But before you send it in, get with a friend that has a Mac (take along an external drive) and try starting it up in Target Disk mode. I've heard that sometimes you can salvage some stuff that way. (Didn't work with my friends MacBook, though.)
