Memorial Day

Post by Omphalos »

Hope you all had a good holiday. My side of the family has not had any servicepersons since my grand-dad's generation (he retired in the 60's from the Air Force with his second star, and died in the 70's), but in my wife's family her dad was a Lt. Colonel and her brother a full bird Colonel in the Filipino army. Other than remembering them (and trying to call her brother, who is still living) we did a bunch of work around the house and grilling of various meats/drinking of beers.

Memorial Day is for servicemen who died in the line of duty. (I believe its roots lie in decorating the graves of civil war soldiers.)

Veteran's Day is for the ones who remembered to duck.

I ate too much and drank too much so it was a good one for me. :D

Hope you all had a good holiday. Not many in the military in my family, other than my grandfather who died as a POW during WWII. I never knew him - my father barely remembers him - but raised a glass nonetheless.

Remembering either veterans or the dead on any day is never wrong. I didn't mean it like that.
