2010 Comicon News

Post by Omphalos »

I have always eschewed the clusterfuck that Comicon probably is, but since important genre related shit comes out of it, perhaps we should have a place to discuss some of it.

Here is the first I've seen; I'm sure that this has a snowball's chance in hell of making it, at least as envisioned this way, but a WWZ movie would certainly be worth a viewing or two, AFAIAC.

The last year I attended, 2003, was the really the beginning of the Hollywood take over of the convention. From friends who still continued to attend, it's become harder and harder to have fun because so much focus is on shit media and having to deal with asshat studio people.

I do miss seeing people but it's just too damn big to enjoy anymore.

Judge Dredd

Post by Omphalos »

Here's some news on Judge Dredd

http://www.scificool.com/karl-urban-con ... dd-rumors/

I absolutely do not get this whole Judge Dredd thing. I remember how stupid the Stallone movie was. I also remember several of my friends telling me that the comic book was much, much better. Two or three years ago I tracked down several of the "Best of" Judge Dredd anthologies, and I gotta tell you, it was every bit as stupid as the Stallone movie. Nothing more that over-violent law-enforcement wish-fulfillment, perpetrated upon the reader by cardboard do-gooders with large weapons and attitude problems. I have no idea how that dumb ass comic lasted so long. 2000 A.D. I believe it was called. Good luck with this one. These guys are gonna need all the luck they can get, because the source material is trash.

The Stallone movie was a hoot: Max von Sydow walks into the desert... WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE?!  :shifty:

You just had to watch it in the right frame of mind: brain unplugged! :D

But someone remake it, or make a new episode?

My last year was 1998 (possibly 1999). Even then, it was Just. Too. Big.

I pretty much hated it, and my passes were free. I've never even been the slightest bit tempted to return.

(Also, San Diego being on the water means that traffic is a disaster. Obviously, no one is approaching from the west. Not too many are coming from south of San Diego. That leaves a mass of humanity trying to reach one specific location from just the north or east. The show needs to be moved to, like Kansas City or Memphis or some other land-locked burg with roads that lead in all four directions).

I've been hearing nothing but great things about Wondercon in San Fran. None of the hollywood bullshit, nowhere near as crowded. Lots of creators prefer it to San Diego now.
