Is there supposed to be an actual trailer there or is it just text info.

Re: Avatar Trailer
Maybe the first link should be this:
http://www.avatar-movie.co.uk/
This morning, from home, I actually got the "view trailer" button. But that flash page, at 1.5 MB, took three or four minutes to load. And THEN when you click the trailer it sends you to another page and starts to download a 12.3 MB flash.
Screw it for now.

Not loving that site - couldn't see anything.
Assume this is the trailer there?
Was quite looking forward to this one... now my fancy isn't feeling all that tickled.

Looks fairly underwhelming. Besides, I haven't been too interested in cartoons since I was a kid.

Re: Avatar Trailer
I'm not a James Cameron fan by any means but I know people have been talking about this for awhile. It would appear that a new type of camera was involved in filming that should make the 3D effect quite a bit better than what we've seen in the past. It actually uses two cameras to create depth as having two eyes do. I'm just interested to see if this makes that much of an improvement. I don't have very high hopes for the film but if it can be a new leap in cinematography it might be worth it.Robspierre wrote:It's going to be in 3D, dunno how much the process will effect the look of the film, haven't seen an 3D trailers yet.

Oh, what is this shit:
Ah, of course, alien planet, rules of physics are completely different. You will believe that a mountain can ... float.
Blue Elves ... how are these not Smurfs groed up?
Is there anything original here? Human in wheelchair intoxicated by new freedom of alien avatar body, goes native, turns against his own?
Yawn.

After Cameron's past SF films, I'll give him a chance on this one. I'm fearful however that its going to turn out to be over-produced.

Re: Avatar Trailer
Avatar has definitely got my interest. We're talking James Cameron here. If any filmmaker has almost earned a blank, signed cheque from me, Cameron would be one of the top directors with such an honor. He's done five films I really like, some of which are my all-time favorites and hold up as some of the best films ever made. The Avatar trailer looks interesting and definitely screams of Cameron's style. I like the basic story synopsis and the cast looks great.
As for the fan reaction thus far, I'm definitely chalking that up to too much internet hype fed over too long a period of time. Like the buzz before the first Star Wars prequel, it built into a storm of expectation that could never live up to it (ignoring how lousy TPM was for a moment). Plus, so many fans keep demanding each new big film to be Star Wars, Alien, Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, The Matrix, LOTR or whatever mold-breaking, era-defining, effects-leaping, uber-film to end all films. It just doesn't work that way and fans would do well to temper their enthusiasm with pragmatism.
The most oft-repeated fanboy complaint I've read online is the Avatar trailer appearing to some as too much like a Star Wars prequel. As if there was ever any danger of a Cameron film sinking so low

Re: Avatar Trailer
Cameron is a hack of himself. Like Picasso. He peaked, then was given a blank check as you say and made Titanic. Avatar looks like a hybrid of Abyss and Aliens in 3D, sure it sounds like a fanboy dream, but thats exactly who James Cameron is catering too. I have to agree with Omph, I'm sick of the hype for this film, and I can't wait to see it tank.
Don't get me wrong, Aliens is a great film in its own right, Alien was better. Abyss was great and was his only real sci-fi movie, I'm sick of action films with robots or aliens being called "sci-fi". Lucas couldn't improve on Star Wars with all the cash in the world, but at least his ego is no where near the size of Cameron's. With AVATAR it seems like he's trying to out Cameron Cameron. Camp will ensue.
Hopefully the new 3D technology will be enough to make the movie a visual masterpiece. Other than that I didn't see anything impressive in the trailer. Even the CGI was standard, the 3D is going to have to be really damn good to over come that.

Re: Avatar Trailer
Well, Hollywood had one shot at the hype machine with me and they took me for all of my $9.50 over a decade ago. But they haven't convinced me to see anything that I thought was an absolute shit film since, so I figure I'm doing well. And to be quite honest, I don't mind taking chances on proven risk takers (Cameron's Avatar) or new risk takers (Blomkamp's District 9). It's the Brett Ratner's, Michael Bay's, Roland Emmerich's and Stephen Sommer's that don't deserve their careers or a penny of my money. Sure Avatar might suck, but I'd rather risk getting burned for that film than Transformers 2, Terminator: Salvation, X-Men Origins: Wolverine or G.I.-fucking-JoeAmpoliros wrote:Cameron is a hack of himself. Even though i'm interested in watching this, i guess Cameron can be called a hack. At least to the extent of taking someone else's ideas. Here check this out and tell me if you find it similar:
It's an old PC game called Albion.
Story:
In the year 2227, the gigantic, interstellar space ship Toronto reaches a distant planetary system. The ship's owners, the huge corporation Doimlr-Daihatsu-Thompson, believe that there are rich deposits of raw materials on the third planet of the system, and the Toronto is to mine the whole planet's resources at once. The data that describes the planet as a desert, however, turns out to be false. Albion is a world full of life, secrets, surprises, and magic. When Tom Driscoll, the pilot of the reconnaissance team, discovers this, he swears to save Albion from Toronto's tentacles.

The movie seems to be about big-bad Earth-types who want to mine something very valueable from this planet. I bet its something like monopoles. Monopoles, if they exist, will be found in zero-g, but with some crafty explanation, they just might explain this.SandChigger wrote:OWN MORE TIME!

Re: Avatar Trailer
Imagine a magnet. It comes with a north and a south pole. If you break a magnet, for example, and remove the south part from the north, the surface where you broke the magnet now becomes the new south pole, and the fragment you have has its own north and south pole, right? Ever feel what happens when two magnets repel each other? That is because they have poles that go together (opposite, negative to positive) and poles that repel each other (similar - like positive to positive).
A monopole is a rock or fragment of metal that is magnetic but only has one pole - either north or south. They are only theoretical at this point, but most physicists believe that they exist and can be found in zero-g or microgravity environments, like on asteroids and stuff. We expect to find them in all different sizes: From microscopic on up. They will be very useful in electromagnets. They appear in SF with some regularity, especially in hard SF stories that involve Bussard ramjets, but also in anti-gravity. In Avatar the race that the humans are trying to move so they can mine appear to be primitive, but if you have ever read any good anthropological SF, like Chad Oliver or Ursula K. LeGuin, then you know that primitive appearances mean nothing.
And that is why I am now looking forward to this story. Because I think that the invading Earthlings are going to learn that lesson the hard way, and the "magic" that the aboriginal creatures can do is the result of a super-high technology that we cannot fathom. Or at least I hope so. The trailer leaves one with the impression that the bullish humans are going to get a come-uppance of some sort.

I really hope that you're right about it being supertech and not just more stinky "Look, Mama Gaia, I'm hugging a tree!" feel-good greeny mysticism BS. Supertech is at least sci-fi, and would help the heavy-handed subtext go down smoother.

Indeed very interesting. I can see why the humans would be interested in that case. What you said about primitive races reminded me of the Nox on SG-1

The more I see of Avatar, the less I care. So far it looks like 3 hours of 'decent' CGI featuring mechs or neutered cat-people getting attacked by X monster or each other. I really don't want to waste money to see this in 3D which is the only fair way to see it.

I'm curious now to see (hear) what the Na'vi language sounds like. And hey, it's got Sigourney.
I love the "Dances with Smurfs" meme floating about now. (Did anyone catch the South Park episode back in November? Just heard about it the other day.)
I figure I passed, in the end, on seeing 2012 in the theatre, may as well do this one.

I'm actually starting to look forward to this. I enjoy some Science "Fantasy", because once there is one totally obsurd thing (floating mountains say) then I can let go of my hard-SF nazi mentality and just enjoy it. It's just fantasy with machinery in my mind.

Re: Avatar Trailer
I went and saw 2012 in the theater, was pretty decent. The avatar trailer on the big screen looks much better than on the small, so interest level has raised slightly.
If I can hit the afternoon show on a day off for 4 bucks, might just do it. Is still don't understand the handicapped marine part in relation to the avatar part.
You have a guy who cant walk, transported across space virtually to drive a physical body to infiltrate and win over the natives. He appears to go rogue and fight for their side.
Wouldn't the forces he works for just turn the machine off and end it? why bother with the handicapped marine part anyway, what does that have to do with anything?
I would have just made the story line, a former Marine is approached by a group who has discovered what is happening on this planet, and they have stolen the technology to project him to the planet to work with the natives and win the battle against strip mining their planet.
Just to piss off the green tree hugging undertone crap, I would let the bad guys win in the end, kill all the blue people, strip mine the crap out of the place, make it a rock, and have the former Marine twist around at the end and be the catalyst for the bad guys winning!!!
or just the scooby do ending.

HD Quicktime trailer looked mediocre at best.
On a small crappy old cinema screen it looked alright.
On a big digital cinema screen it looked quite good.

Re: Avatar Trailer
I saw Avatar this afternoon, and it totally came out of left feild... I was expecting some okay quality pulp SF entertainment, but I got much more. Every plot hole that people pointed out in advance (including myself) is deftly filled. This was far, far beyond what I expected to get, and I can see this becoming something I watch over and over again. Whether you end up liking it or not, everyone should see this movie, and best in theatres.

Ironically, my friends that went to see it switched roles: The one who was expecting it to be awesome thought it was okay, wheras the one who agreed with me that it was extremely over-hyped is now rabid about it.
I'll go see it, just to see the 3d for myself, but maybe after a few weeks. I'm still expecting to write my review as basically "How Cameron mashed-up Aliens with Furngully."

Re: Avatar Trailer
Saw it yesterday at the Bradistan Imax. Story-wise... enjoyable pulp - but it's not a 'dumb' movie, which is good. It's pretty well put together and seems to draw on lots of sources that'll be familiar to the SF crowd. I liked it, even if it didn't break the mould.
It is however, definitely a cinema job - Imax3D if you can get to one. Every single frame is sodding gorgeous - the whole blue-people thing works fantastically well, it never feels like a video-game or even 'digital' in the way that many cg characters do. The depth and thought that has gone into the design (literally) leaps out: the creatures, the motion/animation, the scenery, little touches like the way the photographs and computer screens are in 3d, it's all phenomenal. Visually this is really something quite special.

I refrained from laughing out-loud during much of the film out of respect for the others in the theater, but it was a true piece of shit. While better than I expected it would be a great movie to get drunk before hand and mock. If you have small children I could see them really being into it.

Yeah, when I saw that I had to do a double take. Apparently its rarer than Steakandblowjobium, which would have been a better name.
For those that have seen it, is it explained why the 'unobtainium's' largest deposits are under the Navi lands when there are massive floating rocks of it every where?

Re: Avatar Trailer
There is a fair bit of the Na'vi language, I can't tell what they were drawing fom, buch many of the accents came off as African-esque. I'm sure it will give you plenty to have fun shredding to death Chig! (I'll be looking forward to that).
I saw it in 3D, which was much less cheesy than I'd expected, it wasn't really "jump off the screen 3-D" it was more of just a subtle depth added to the image, definitely worth trying out. After 10 minutes I forgot it was 3-D at all.
I'm not sure I'd recommend it for kids, it's got a decent level of violence.
I thought "unobtainium" was a nice nod to the hard SF crowd that always makes fun of soft SF and science-fantasy. By calling it that the writers openly admitted than this is not meant in any way to be hard-sf, and it meant to be partially fantasy (though no more fantasy than say star-trek or almost all other filmed SF). It was a much better move than trying to take themselves too seriously.
Maybe I'm biased because I think that science fiction film is almost allways guaranteed to be shit, and as such this was a step up in my opinion. Pulp, yes, but decently well thought out, with not-terrible acting (which is very rare for SF, it's almost always shit), a fairly believable shift in the main character's world view, and a very stunning film visually.
I give it a glowing review, I can see where anyone who hated it was coming from, especially compared to written SF - but all filmed SF is garbage in my opinion. Even so-called classics like Blade Runner I find to be depressingly sub-par, and in a world of absolute garbage this things is an f-ing diamond.
It is an excessively tree hugging movie though, mashed with Ferngully is about right!
Amp - no, they don't explain why the best deposits of the stuff aren't under or in the floating mountains, but they could have put that as the target for the mining and it would have worked as well plot-wise (much better than under the Na'vi city actually). That who business is a bit of a "let that one slide" or "turn your brain off" moment. Luckily there were fewer of those moments than expected in the film though.

It's a conlang (constructed language), created specifically for the movie by a USC linguist named Paul Frommer. (Never heard of him before this.) The "African-esque" sound probably comes from a series of ejectives. Evidently Cameron wanted a language that would sound alien but still be pronounceable by human actors.A Thing of Eternity wrote:There is a fair bit of the Na'vi language, I can't tell what they were drawing fom, buch many of the accents came off as African-esque. I'm sure it will give you plenty to have fun shredding to death Chig! (I'll be looking forward to that).
Frommer has reportedly been working on the language for four years or so, and he appears to have been fairly serious about it, so there's no "shredding" to be done AFAIK at the moment. The only criticism I have regards some rather naive statements by Frommer to the effect that he hopes his language will "out-Klingon Klingon."
Marc Okrand created a fictional language for a long-term franchise with an existing fanbase of rabid weird people. (That's not a slam, either: I mean it as praise. I'm just not a Trekkie myself.) Unless enough people identify with the Na'vi (and I'm sure there are plenty of "Ooh, we hate being Western! Ooh, we hate being human! Ooh, I wanna hug a tree and glow blue in the dark!" losers out there, but how many of them have the brains or dedication to learn a new language?) and want to learn it, it's just going to end up another interesting curiosity, like Tolkien's Elvish languages.
There are more conlangs out there than you could shake a big-sized stick at. It's going to take more than one movie with booteefool CG to create a new language community.

(The bar's pretty high, actually. That's why I'm snailing along with the Galach stuff. )

Re: Avatar Trailer
Saw it in 3D last night in Seattle. There were a bunch of plot holes and even more left omitted. I can do with the plot holes in a film, but the omissions bothered the fuck out of me. Still, this is the goddam purdiest movie I've ever seen, and Cameron did a great job pulling the old heart strings. Overall I though it was on a level with The Abyss in terms of story quality. The strength is obviously the effects. Had they been done any other way the whole movie would have been a gigantic eye roller. Done the way they were - fantastic scenes that were well integrated and given a very plausible, realistic feel - I think its worth seeing again. I'm sure I will, just so I can go in and really nail down the plot holes and omissions. I was pretty dazzled the first time around and want to go in with my higher brain functions in tact.
Ill probably see The Road first though.

My wife wouldn't talk to me for a day and a half after we saw The Road because she was mad that I would let her go to a movie like that. She was pretty much a mess by the end of it. I gave her at least three warnings and plenty of opportunity not to see it. I guess I didn't try hard enough.Omphalos wrote: Ill probably see The Road first though.

I didn't even bother asking Sylvia if she wants to go. I just told her I was going to walk to the local theater and see it myself this week sometime. After I finished reading the book a few years ago she asked me what it was about. I told her it was "an amazing manners tale of love, deception and redemption in Victorian England." She's heard that so many times now that she knows it's really SF and that she wont like it.Nekhrun wrote:My wife wouldn't talk to me for a day and a half after we saw The Road because she was mad that I would let her go to a movie like that. Today, the 23rd, is a holiday over here. Gonna go catch the 3D matinee.
Btw, if you get bored, pop over by Facebook and search for groups with Na'vi in the name, and count the "I wanna be a Na'vi" groups.
Still not sure what to make of the early adopters already learning the language from the bits and pieces seeping onto the web.

Re: Avatar Trailer
Wow.
Ahem ... well, that definitely raises the bar so far as the visuals of sci-fi/CG movies go.
Damn. It wasn't until the last few minutes that I realized I'd sat the whole time forward in my seat. Not on the edge mind you, but not relaxed, either.
Cool.
The 3D glasses weren't as obtrusive as I'd feared. I had a twinge of motion sickness at the very beginning, when they were emerging from suspended animation, but after that it was fine. (Looking back now, they were a bit too fast to recover after six years in transit, huh.)
There are no doubt dozens of little details to nitpick to death story-wise, after the fact, but while I was watching it, I didn't give a fuck, it was too gorgeous to look at for me to care. Definitely needs to be seen in the theatre and in 3D.
(Thought of another movie it reminded me of; anyone else seen The Emerald Forest?)

Yeah ... but at ¥2100 a pop and with the nearest theaters showing it about an hour away, I don't know if I'll be seeing it again in the theater.
Evidently there's already a book with supplementary information out. Read about it over in an Amazon discussion thread; will try to post the link later.

(The boardware didn't like it in the URL tag for some reason. )
Um ... never did catch why those fucking mountains float. I mean, it was kewl and all, but it made no sense.

That's because it was not explained. Nor was the purpose of mining the metal, or the relationship between the metal and the mountains, if any, or the identity of and lack of any involvement in what was going by any of the other avatar drivers, or the reason that the Na'vi had a pre-existing ritual for body jumping, or...a whole bunch of other shit.SandChigger wrote:Um ... never did catch why those fucking mountains float. I think it's a given that they float due to high concentration of unobtainium, which is anti-grav producing. Why they mine it? Man, if it produces anti-grav then a handfull would be worth more than a diamond the size of the moon.Omphalos wrote:That's because it was not explained. Plenty of other plot holes though, like why they don't mine those mountains if there is enough of the mineral there to cause that kind of levitation.

I gotcha, but they did not say one damn thing about it, and the only clue that we have that unobtanium has anti-grav potential is that it floats in when its placed in that electronic plate - which by the way does nothing to say why it floats in its natural environment, but not when the humans have it at their base unless it's in that gizmo. = plot hole + omission.

Story is a bit meh, but the effects really made the movie. Unlike a Michael "More Explosions" Bay movie, the effects were used to augment the world presented on screen not to give anti-social miscreants orgasms.

Good call, I'd missed that it only floats on those plates. No chance that they use a net or something to hold it down in those big trucks? Re: Avatar Trailer
I didn't get that it was the unobtanium that had antigravity properties at all. I took the electric plate thingy as nothing more than a fancy display base on the guy's desk.Omphalos wrote:the only clue that we have that unobtanium has anti-grav potential is that it floats in when its placed in that electronic plate - which by the way does nothing to say why it floats in its natural environment, but not when the humans have it at their base unless it's in that gizmo. = plot hole + omission.
Did I catch the market value correctly? $20 million per kilogram? That's a bit stupid, isn't it? $20,000/gram? An ounce of gold is currently going for about $1127. That's about 28.3 grams. So ignoring the question of change in dollar value over 145 years, unobtanium is 503 times more expensive than gold. Maybe that's not as stupid as I first thought. Maybe it's just the giving of the amount in kilograms that's stupid?
They mentioned the mountains floating because of "flux vortices" that also knock out their radar and missile targeting instrumentation. Pseudoscience gabble babble.
I did like that they made the Pandoran Gaia (Paia? Paella?) a giant alien "brain" composed of physical connections and interactions between elements of the biosphere, not simply some disincarnate mumbo-jumbess mess.
So ... how long do you think it's going to be before we see godawful unsightly geeks in blue body paint all nekkid except for wee little string loinstraps with tails, purring and hissing at each other?

Let me know if you need some help with that ... I'll probably be more than ready by then.
In the afternoon yesterday (it's already Xmas A.M. here ... Merry Christmas! ) a search turned up 70-some Na'vi-related groups on Facebook. A majority on the first page or two of results appeared to be of the "I wanna be a Na'vi" ilk.
I don't want to be one. I just want to do one.

Re: Avatar Trailer
I think I'm rather looking forward to making fun of some Na'vi hobbits.
(After all, your run-of-the-shire wannabe geek isn't going to be anywhere near big enough to pretend to be a "real" Na'vi. )
I finally had a look at the page for the movie on Wikipedia. I didn't know it's supposed to be the Alpha Centauri A system where this is taking place. Guess that explains how they could get there in just six years.
Anyway, fast cycler, I'm starting to get bored.
Edit:
I finally took a better look at the movie pamphlet I got the other day. Assuming that the Japanese is an accurate translation of materials provided by the US studio/production company, it says that the unobtanium is a natural superconductor material and that its abundance in the rocks of the "Hallelujah Mountains" is what causes them to float. So it's magnetic levitation using superconductors. The mountains in the "flux vortices" and the little piece in the boss's desk display are both being levitated in the same way.
You may have also noticed that not all of the mountains were attached to the ground by the giant vines/roots (like the ones they climb up when what's-his-face goes to get his banshee). I wondered what would keep the mountains in place when the wind blew. Seems like the wind would eventually push the mountains beyond the flux vortices and down they would come, right? But it looks like they'll have an explanation for that, too:
I kinda wonder, though, if a magnetic field large enough to levitate a mountain of superconductor wouldn't have adverse effects on any living thing within it.
Or is Pandoran life immune to that sort of thing?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_l ... conductorsThe levitation of the magnet is further stabilized due to flux pinning within the superconductor; this tends to stop the superconductor leaving the magnetic field, even if the levitated system is inverted.

Just recently arrived from watching it at the local cinema. As far as visuals go: this movie is a new yard stick; storywise: cheesy, sadly .
I was expecting, plotwise, for it to go as a sort of sci-fi "Dancing with Wolves" but it was cheaper and so "in your face" obvious that it killed, in me, any wish to see it again.
It's definitely a movie to watch in 3d because the camera angles were shot with that particular "wow" effect in consideration.
Also, the actress that plays the role of Neytiri does a great job.

She is good, isn't she? Evidently she's the one played Uhuru in Abram's Star Trep.

Now there's something nice to watch in 3d, if such was available.
I love that movie so much, i had to keep thinking there are good people in the world in order to kill any feelings of misanthropy. I really got emotional with it

Re: Avatar Trailer
Well supposedly Cameron has made the tech backward compatible so he can remake movies in 3d. Obviously he'll start with some of his own work.
What first? Aliens in 3d would be fuckin awesome. Abyss would be quite a trip...
Naw he's doing TITANIC. The only reason to make Titanic in 3d is for 3d Nude Kate Winslet.
The Only Reason. This is why I've lost 90% of my respect for Cameron.
Personally i'd love to see IMAX Star Wars: A New Hope in 3d.

So does anyone else out there think that the whole reason to increase the Best Picture slots to 10 so they could add Avatar is the Academy's way of saying Avatar is going to win Best Picture?

Re: Avatar Trailer
Avatar's the only thing on the list I've seen.
I think it should get an award for the effects and new technology and for the work that went into developing the detail of the setting, but story-wise there's just not that much there to deserve one.
Won't this just emphasize the same ole wrong message, that CG can make up for a flimsy story ... the last thing Woolyhood needs to be hearing again?

Avatar will clean up in all the technical categories though.

I'll bet "the making of" Avatar will be a total snoozer. "Here's a bunch of people wearing funny helmets and motion capture suits" "here's some people without funny helmets and motion capture suits in front of a green screen" "here's some nerd adding in the environment"
The technique they used is super cool and interesting in and of it's self, but I'd hate to have to actually watch footage of it happening!

Re: Avatar Trailer
I feel a Blue Like Me fanfic coming on!
My copy of the "Survival Guide" book arrived yesterday. What a piece of shite.
OK, I knew it was going to be an in-universe guide for subversives/activists, but the intro & first section are just over the fucking top. Feh.
I was really hoping for some details on the fictional Alpha Centauri A system, but it's sadly lacking. They tell you the gas giant has 14 moons but not which one of them is Pandora. (From the fact that moons five and six have substantial nitrogen-oxygen atmospheres, I guess it's one or the other.) Fucking hack job.
The Na'vi are classified taxonomically as Homo pandorus.
Excuse me? How did a species of alien blue Smurfkitties end up in a Terran primate genus?
Moronic.
Plus someone informed me that Cameron has termed the work "sci-fi + fantasy". ... Fantasy? Right, that's it, I'm out the door.

Re: Avatar Trailer
For shits and giggles last night before leaving the office, I ran the Stargen program about 10,000 times with Alf Cen A as the star and there was NOT ONE result with three gas giants. It's either two rocky planets and one jovian or a rock, a dwarf jovian (just a few times bigger than the Earth), and a regular jovian. (That's just based on the mass of the star, doesn't take the fact that Alf Cen is binary [trinary if you count Proxima] into account, and doesn't handle "hot jupiters" ... so grain of salt time.)
More damning is the fact that if there were jovians around either Alf Cen A or B, we would already know it. (We're pretty good now at finding jovians.)
Frank Herbert can be excused for having put planets where we now know none exist or are even possible, because we didn't know then what we know now, but this crap just flies in the face of what is known. It's "science fiction" that says "Fuck you!" to Science. A pick-and-choose universe means ... fantasy.
Feh.

Re: Avatar Trailer
He forms a nice contrast with this:
Some nutjob showed up on the FB Avatar page forums yesterday saying that the PETA "Proggy" award Cameron received recently was a nice thing, but the scene with the killing of the peacock-deer-like-thingy for food was too much and that he hoped Cameron would contact such-and-such author and reconsider his position on hunting before he makes a sequel.
Naturally, I replied with a link to that People Eating Tasty Animals group. He came back with "well, you keep right on eating meat and let's see who lives longer."
Hey, I may not live as long eating meat, but I'm eating BETTER than the PETArds and Vegoons.

Re: Avatar Trailer
Well I actually sprung to see this one in '3D' at the regular theatre. Dang! I didn't realize movie tickets had gotten so high and we went to the matinee.
This was a pure fantasy film. PERIOD! Good graphics, predictable story line. Pocahontas meets Battle for Terra. Got a few good laughs out of it, my 12 year old thought it was awesome, but then again he is only 12.
I enjoyed for a relaxing movie and time spent with my husband and two of my sons.
One thing I did like was that the 3D wasn't 'in your face' like the older movies were.

Re: Avatar Trailer
one of the reasons this movie is making so much money -
the buzz about the effects is getting people like you and me
into a theater, even with a known weak story - would you have
gone to see this or waited for the DVD if hadn't been 3D (and
so talked about) ?

Re: Avatar Trailer
Good question.. I sure wouldn't have spent the money to see it at a regular theater if not for the 3D. I would have waited till it came to the discount theater that we normally go to or wait and rent it on DVD.
I'm not one to usually 'follow the crowd' when it comes to watching a movie based on what critics or the media says.
But you do have a good point. I 'fear' that more producers will use this '3D' stuff as a gimmick to get people to pay the extra bucks to see it on big screen. 3D may work for some movies, but it is not for every one of them. There are good stories out there that 3D would distract from.
And I pray that if/when we finally get a new Dune movie that it will not be treated as a gimmick.

Re: Avatar Trailer
I keep hearing that you guys down south have to pay extra for the 3-D version? We just have it in regular theatres for normal prices, unless you want to see it in Imax, then it's extra.

Re: Avatar Trailer
Yeah, I think it was $ 2 extra.
We went to the last showing before the evening prices kicked in. Adult tickets were $ 9.50 each and the child was $ 9.25. (it would have been $11.75/adult)
Then of course the high prices of the popcorn and sodas inside.
The theater I normally go to, we can get in for $ 2 each during the day or $ 3 each after 6:00 p.m. The popcorn and drinks are still high but not as high as in the other theater.
I admit I like the seating in the one we saw Avatar in better than the seating in our regular theater because the seats are elevated by rows so the short people (like me) can still see over the heads of the person in front of them.

Naw! That's not it. It's that the government subsidizes your movie viewing, and is so polite about it that you don't even know it's happening!A Thing of Eternity wrote:We're so socialized our private corperations forget to gouge us!Omphalos wrote:One of the many benefits of Canada's form of collective socialism.A Thing of Eternity wrote:I keep hearing that you guys down south have to pay extra for the 3-D version? It's Official: James Cameron Will Direct 'Avatar 2' and 'Avatar 3' Next

There's been a bunch of talk as of late surrounding James Cameron and
whether he would be taking on another project (possibly Cleopatra
with Angelina Jolie) prior to filming one or more Avatar sequels.
Obviously an Avatar sequel was a given the moment the first film
became the highest grossing movie of all time, but the question soon
revolved around how long audiences would have to wait for that follow
up.
?
Good news finally came today in the form of 20th Century Fox
officially announcing that James Cameron's next directorial project
will be Avatar 2 and Avatar 3, with plans to release the two in 2014
and 2015, respectively. "In the second and third films, which will be
self-contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc, we will
not back off the throttle of Avatar's visual and emotional
horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters,
which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the
world," Cameron said.
Previously, Cameron has noted that an Avatar sequel would focus
heavily on the oceans of Pandora, which seems logical considering
Cameron's love of the ocean. One should expect plenty of new
characters to be introduced, and perhaps we'll even get to explore
new planets too. The great thing about Avatar is that it takes place
in an entirely new world where Cameron's wicked imagination will be
given free rein to run wild.
Are you looking forward to Avatar 2 and 3?

Meh. If it's going to be more of the same sanctimonious bullshit, I'll pass.

Same shit is cool with me, I'll just turn off the audio and listen to some Pink Floyd or something, maybe buy some mushrooms. Trust me, there will be SOME way to enjoy the sequels.

I can just imagine eating some mushrooms, going to see it in 3D at the theatre and bringing some good headphones and just having my mind blown to smithereens. Rush would also be a good choice... or wait, YES. Yes would be the choice to go with (the band, not the word).

Re: Avatar Trailer
I don't think I could ever see Rush live again. I'd be thinking, "I bet Anderson is several rows in front of me, doing the white man's overbite and showing Becca's tits to the band."A Thing of Eternity wrote:I can just imagine eating some mushrooms, going to see it in 3D at the theatre and bringing some good headphones and just having my mind blown to smithereens. Re: Avatar Trailer
shit, wait til Spanky McDune gets them backstage passes for Spinal Tap ... you know, they wrote "Big Bottom" for Jabecca ...
s'anyway, I'm confused - the oceans of ... uh ... whatever fucking planet Avatar's about, or new & different planets ?
or both ? or oceans on new and different planets ? and will there be a Titanic moment with one of them blue broads standing
on the railing at the front of huge ship going across the oceans of ... uh ... wherever ? and will the guy fall off the boat
and fucking freeze to death ? and will we get to see Sigorney Weaver's titties ?

I'd love to see Rush live, an't believe I haven't already. The KJA thing doesn't bother me much honestly, every band has idiot fans. He likes a couple other really good bands too, and some terrible ones.Omphalos wrote:I don't think I could ever see Rush live again. If I let him ruin Rush for me I'm the only one that loses.
