Heh heh he thats a bargain reprint that B&N did afew years ago. I have 2, I paid 5.95 for them iirc. It doesn't use the standard font, i was planning on using mine as copies i can abuse, highlight, dog-ear, and annotate.

I just picked up a softcover copy of the Dune Encyclopedia on ebay, allegedly in very good condition, for $11.06. Just happened to see it with 2 minutes to go and no bids, starting at $9 (had one last-minute competitor, but slapped him down). Cool. A hardcover's beyond my budget right now, but at least I'll have one.

I haven't regretted getting my used copy through Amazon. (I forget how much I paid now, though wasn't much.)
The pdf from that Russian site is useful for searching and finding things quickly, but the quality of the scan leaves a lot to be desired. Always better to have a real book copy anyway.

Here's a fun little experiment I just tried.
Go to ebay, to books, to the science fiction category. Sort by "Price + shipping: highest first." Scroll past the first few Featured items.
Wow. I had no idea there were SF books going for those kinds of prices.
Currently the highest priced item is a rare PKD book for $3250.
Signed Dune for a mere $2850 (and the bastard's still gonna charge shipping!)
Some serious money on that page. A little out of my price range.

Anyone who pays that kind of money for a SF book is a tool. You can find most of what you want for a few hundred dollar range.Liege-Killer wrote:Here's a fun little experiment I just tried.

when one sees prices for one exemplar of the book,
why don't they announce a limited delux re-edition ... there is certainly a fist of dollar/euro do win ...

It's because too much in that book contradicts what BH & KJA have done. It would not mesh with the crap that they have put out.

well, it would make sense they "leverage" from the DE to write their prequels... what disturb me indeed, is that they took obviously from it, and atop so much liberties to deviate from it...
some deviation is ok, the Encyclopedia could be considered as an "archeological" work which might be biased through time-distance, but here the standard deviation is too high
due to price increase on the free ebay market , i have been forced to print the DE on paper at work ...
(shoot, i try to be economic in resizing 2 pages of the DE on 1 and printing front & back )

Re: eBay & Amazon finds
Hummm....I must admit that BH made a good zine "checklist" in his bio, you know. I found in eBay some 70's interviews (for example, in march 1976 with Scintillation fanzine) more interesting than the 1984's tie-in campaign : about writing CoD, GEoD, the Jodo's attempt, his own script(in 78) etc. We have so much to learn again (i never saw his unpublished "Dune tarot" or some spec scripts he wrote...). A duniverse iceberg...
PS: found in eBay a Memorial edition signed ....by FH himself ! ZOMBIE FRANKIE !!!

The Easton Press one? That one has been floating around on eBay for quite some time now. FH's signature is on a sticky, not on the book itself, so its possible that FH never even touched that volume. If its the one Im thinking about there are a number of signatures in the "rememberences" section.Askaris de Dar wrote:Hummm....I must admit that BH made a good zine "checklist" in his bio, you know. Re: eBay & Amazon finds
Yeah that's it! I think that this book wasn't initially a "memorial". I read in the Collector's Notes : "this special edition...is a memorial to Frank Herbert. Instead of the original introductions...a number of outstanding writers...have been asked to contribute their remembrances and thoughts..." & page xxviii : "these remembrances were presented to The Easton Press shortly after Frank Herbert's death on February 11, 1986".
It's maybe a similar editorial situation as the "Maker of Dune" genesis : "The Dune Books [vol.7]...This is Frank's first collection of nonfiction...It also includes a number of interviews conducted especially for this book and never published elsewhere...September 1985 P.S. Frank Herbert died on February 11, 1986...This collection of essays is now doubly precious...A fascinating collection of essays and articles_personally selected by the master himself before his death..."

Re: eBay & Amazon finds
That memorial edition was produced by a company from Connecticut called the Easton Press. They specialize in leather-bound presentation and gift volumes. The rememberences were from about thirty different authors, editors, fans and the like, remembering FH and the time that they spent with him. Its a nice edition, and there are two versions. A great thing to have, but IIRC the first run was published in 89 or so, so FH would have signed none of them personally (just stickys, like this one has). You can still get this book from Easton. Its the number two volume in their masterpieces of SF line.

My personal volume is a "special collector's Edition.Bound in Genuine Leather." with an ex-libris and a "Collector's Notes" leaf. Copyright Norwalk 1987. No trace of colophon (date of printing, print run). According Stephensen-Payne this book was published in September 1987...Daniel Levack (published in 1988 but wrote "through early 1987") precised : "bound in red leather with gold lettering on the spine and front cover. Gold design on the front cover. Gilded edges. Red sewn ribbon page marker."
Don't know if it's a 1st print run.

Re: eBay & Amazon finds
I meant it was the second delivered. The deal is that you buy one book at full price ($55 these days) then they send you Dune free, then you buy the rest of their books for $55 each. Dune is the hook that they use to get you interested in the series. Every other book is delivered randomly. The first book is different for every subscriber, depending on what they have on hand. The second though is always Dune.Freakzilla wrote:Who was number one?

Hi Chig You said "bogus" ? You mean "erroneous" or "incomplete" ? That's it ? I didn't check it yet, but I was surprised to found some rare interviews (the Scintillation one for example).
PS: I have a bibliographic rule : don't follow blindly anyone, never trust one unique source, always compare (other bibliographies, databases, commercial and libraries catalogues,directories..) and if possible buy the item.

Re: eBay & Amazon finds
Yeah that's my version !the other version (the one pictured on the right above) has the typical heavy cardstock endpapers with the Masterpieces of Science Fiction logo on it. If you are curious what this logo looks like just take a look at the cover for the Easton Press edition of Asimov's Foundation. Its three towers extending upwards, with the middle highest.
Unfortunately ... we can't decide if it's an original ed. or a reprint (what a shame !)
really ? oh ! why not ...if you find a sticky on eBay mail meHerbert did sign a bunch of stickys before he died, and you can find those on line sometimes. that would probably be more appropriate, but still, you can never say that Herbert touched or signed your edition of the book, so its still all just fancy window dressings that dont change the value of the book.

Re: eBay & Amazon finds
Well, with collected books the value is almost entirely in what the buyer is willing to pay. But when you think about it would you rather have a book that FH touched and signed, or a sticker with his name on it that he signed one Sunday morning and gave to his publisher to distribute to fans? Id rather have the book that the man touched.

Well...you know, I'm bibliophile, a real book lover, but not "fetishist". Maybe, I'm the only fan who don't care if his Dune books were signed or not by Frank Herbert. No, my "mania" is more abstract, more "intellectual" : a rare interview, an annotated edition (oh! that's a Fullerton dream), his Dune Tarot and Dune spec script ...Oh! a dream

Yes. But the original hardback library edition VIE books used it too. Have you ever seen one of their high-end books? Some of the most beautiful modern books that I have ever seen.
I guess Im kind of a fetishist, but I go through spurts. Several years ago it was classics of mainstream literature. I live in a house with limited space and now that I am back into SF, I have had to sell most of those books to make room for the SF.

Re: eBay & Amazon finds
Oh what a nightmare for me too ... More 100 Dune books, a bunch of magazines, journals, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs & theses
...and my SFF collection of dictionaries & criticism... I don't know what to do with this borgesian Babel library ...
And you know i'm an eBay-addict too and I'm dirty proud of it

Hey, Askaris, contact Brian Herbert (through his wife, Jan(et), maybe? She's on Facebook, too!) and ask for a copy of Brian's Dune Concordance for your research! See what they say.
In my opinion he really had no business listing in a bibliography something he has no intention of making public.

I'm sorry, but all that bibliography stuff is beyond me.
If you want an opinion or explaination about something in the Dune series, I'm your man. It looks like y'all have it all under control.
