Kings, 2009 on NBC
I never heard of this one until NBC splashed adverts all over their election coverage. Looks pretty cool, though I dont think that there is enough information is to properly pre-judge it yet.
Something is about to happen, Hal. Something wonderful!

This one starts the Sunday before next. I still don't know too much about it, but the concept of warring kings in urban centers sounds pretty cool. Anybody else up for it?

I've seen commercials for it several times in the last week or two, but damn if I still have any idea what it's about. Note to the geniuses making these commercials for new shows: you might grab my interest if you give me some idea of the actual premise!
Anyway, if it's on Sundays maybe I'll give it a whirl. I don't have anything to watch on Sundays, since The Unit seems to fizzling out.
By the way, I find myself wondering what exactly this means:

The way my brain computes time, "the Sunday before next" is the same as "last Sunday." Is there something wrong with me? (I mean, specifically in this regard? )Omphalos wrote:This one starts the Sunday before next.

Nope. Something wrong with me. You just have not been around long enough to know how to translate Omphish. That means the 15th, bub.Liege-Killer wrote:I've seen commercials for it several times in the last week or two, but damn if I still have any idea what it's about. I'm so sorry, but that makes no sense at all.
Sunday = this (coming) Sunday, when referring to future time. Or the immediately previous one, if about past time.
Next Sunday is a week later.
Last Sunday a week before the one immediately previous.
At least the way I use them.
But then, I'm living in twenty-oh-nine.

Yes. I know it makes no sense. I am joking about a fuck up I made. I should have said "the Sunday after next." The 15th. Of March.

So'Kay. I think you just read it wrong. You probably read the word "something" as "nothing."SandChigger wrote:Oh. I guess my Omphish is rusty, too.
Sheesh! I even lose both of the linguists. I gotta take a break from this place.

Well hey, I've had a fair number of language courses over the years..... Latin, Greek, Spanish, French, Italian, Old English, and who knows what else. But I don't remember seeing any classes in Omphish being offered. Is there some kinda self-study course I can take? Or have linguists even mapped out the grammar yet?

Mr Teg (not a linguist by profession, though quite cunning) is the only person I know who has any field experience with the living language. Everyone else has had to make do with written records, which, as you know too well, can be less than ideal....

That explains why Teg kept looking at me with that unknowing look on his face. And probably why he hasn't called since. Though there was that thing about the socks too.SandChigger wrote:Mr Teg (not a linguist by profession, though quite cunning) is the only person I know who has any field experience with the living language. Yeah, he later admitted that he had glossed over that part of the pre-trip orientation materials that mentioned some of the stranger cultural traditions of the Omphalomphoi. Like the practice of sock exchange between host and guest with prior social connection....

Preliminary Notes on the Omphalomphoi Culture:
(1) A bizarre sock exchange ritual, purpose unknown. (Symbolic of unity with others? A religious rite? Sexual overtones?).
(2) Cannibalism, particularly the eating of those who study the mind. (A way of capturing the victim's wisdom for one's self?)
(3) Various linguistic oddities, especially in regards to time marking.
Summary: an exceedingly strange culture with barbaric tendencies and some unique (and possibly psychologically unhealthy) practices. More study needed.

You forgot one though:
(4) Frequently hides from children and wives behind enormous piles of books.
And the cannibalism thing is about zombies, pure and simple. A ritualistic homage, if you will.

Every account of the sock exchange I've heard or read leads me to believe there are definite sexual overtones.

Today seems to be a day for sudden declarations of strong emotion. B.B. told me on Jacurutu that he hates me.
