2008 Vote

Post by Omphalos »

My polling place was pretty barren when I went there at 8:30 am this morning, but the automatic vote counter had already registered hundreds and hundreds of ballots cast. I think that there is going to be a TON of people who really do vote this time.

What kinds of percentages do you guys usually get out to vote in the US? I've heard it's been a bit low lately.

And yeah - I think this one might get a few extra people involved!

i heard some pundits suggesting it might be a really high turnout at low 60s. so they're typically lower than canada, we just hit an alltime low this year

I think a normal turnout is like 20% of registered voters.

Minnesota seems to have a pretty high turnout, pretty much the highest in the country. In 2004 we were in the 90% range I think. Today will be pretty high as the weather is pretty nice today. We have same day registration so that seems to help as well.

That's a really nice feature, that's where the Democrats take the homeless from poll-to-poll to vote for Obama multiple times, right?

By the time they figure out what's going on he'll have dissolved the Galactic Senate.

Yeah, the Republicans would never do something like that, would they?

Oh, right, couldn't, could they?

They can't see the homeless. :P

Sorry I ruined your Panther party.

It's not like you could get a homeless person to vote for a republican anyway.

That wouldn't get them any handouts.

Okay, thats definitely not so bad (compared to us anyways, but our turnout was shit this year).

I think they should just make voting manditory (with a small fine or something) and put an option for "don't like any of them/don't give a shit" on the cards. That way if people were forced to at least make the effort to go physically vote they might also make the effort to learn what they're talking about/voting for. Then again... I do have lots of shitty ideas, this might be one of them.

Voting is mandatory in Australia - IIRC when my cousin was over here a few years ago, she had to go down to London and vote at the embassy.
And that, children, is how the little bunny rabbit got his fluffy white tail.

As a minimum, we must demand from SF that it be wiser than the world it speaks to.

I liked it because I didn't have to go do anything other than show up at the polls. I've been much more active this time around though and participated in caucuses and things. I've got a sign in my yard that looks like a McCain sign that says:

Eh bien, ho ho! C'est vachement amusant!

Oh...sorry...first time I heard that one was twenty years ago, right after I got over here, from a French-Spanish guy from Paris named...Manuel. He was a riot. Dead awesome skier, too. Hmmm, wonder what happened to him. He was one of the ones who had sense and left after the year-and-a-half scholarship from Monbusho finished.
