Idiot-Designed Technology (A Bitching Thread)

(Did we have a thread already for this?)

I just discovered that the heating/cooling unit for my office is tied in with those of three or four of the offices around me. If one of the others is set to cooling, the heating doesn't work properly in any of the others. I'm on the east side of the building; the people on the west get the full brunt of the afternoon/evening sun when it's clear. So it can be rather toasty across the hall at the same time it's quite nippy on this.

Like it was today. And one of them had their cooling on.

Brrrrrrrrrr.

What the fuck is the point of having individual units if they can't operate truly independently?

Only in the land of group consensus.... (sigh)

Get that person a sweater for Xmas.

I think Chig would need the sweater.

Tell them to pull their damn drapes. My office set up is eight offices all in a row all along one long wall of a huge building. There is a controller at each end of the row, and I am at the far side (SW corner). One climate unit works for all offices here. Everybody else likes heat, but I like it cold. Its a constant battle, and Id lose it for sure if I did not have a controller. My advice: If you fight, you will eventually win. But it might be a Phyrric victory.

Thing is, I was wearing one yesterday. Glad I was, too, or I'd probably have a cold today. (I think I'm getting one, anyway.) :(

I've already got a plan: since I usually arrive here early, before 8:00 and before everyone else, I'll just turn my unit on to Heating and then simply turn it down low when I go to class or to lunch, instead of turning it off like I have been doing. I have no problem foregoing a minimal "eco-conscious" action that probably has little if any effect anyway.

Idiotic technology? Yeah. I found myself wondering recently how it is that we can split the atom, map our genome, send men to the Moon, etc......... BUT we can't build a vending machine that reliably dispenses product every time you put money in it.

Come on, that's made on purpose so that you pay extra every given number of times you use it...like when you go to a casino...

Can't? Or won't?

Yeah, in the vending machine case, maybe we should all take a good look at ourselves before we blame the moon landing. I mean, you'd think we'd all know by now not to put money in those things. Then again, complaining about a lost dollar or two in a vending machine...doesn't that make us just a little too cheap :)

Reminds me of Seinfeld (naturally)...

"It is my opinion we never should have landed a man on the moon. It was a mistake. Now everything in life is compared to that one accomplishment. 'I can't believe they could land a man on the moon . . . and taste my coffee!' I think we all would have been a lot happier if they hadn't landed a man on the moon. Then we'd say; 'They can't make a prescription bottle top that's easy to open? I'm not surprised they couldn't land a man on the moon. Things make perfect sense to me now.' Neil Armstrong should have said, 'That's one small step for man, one giant leap for every, whining, complaining, SOB on the face of the earth.'"
