Well...I liked that she shut down Byron's new smartass thread, but I'd hate to see the other one get shut down before Byron responds. (If he responds.)

This new BS line about us not wanting to discuss things...who does he expect to fool with that, really?

Sheesh.

Sorry, I forgot that the names of people who have tried to register show up in the Members list whether they've been approved yet or not.

I haven't run an installation of this boardware in the open for a long time, so I forget exactly how it works, but as admin don't you get some sort of notification that there are registrations pending? Or do you stay out of the admin control area and let Ragabash handle that stuff? ;)

Yeah... since I noticed no one was using real pics, I decided to go the full monty on the whole avatar thing.

I always had a fondness for the actress that played that little freak (and in a weird coincidence, she has the same initials as me--ARW), so I though using her all grown up would be fun...

Anyone want to explain their pics?

I obviously don't have an avatar at the moment, so nothing to explain. I usually use something random that happens to be appealing for whatever reason. But I haven't found anything that fits those criteria, so I remain avatar-less.

Username is a bit different. The Omphalos was part of the Oracle at Delphi. It was a pit in the ground and was referred to as the navel of the world, because it resembled a belly button. Since it had philosophical significance the word "omphalos" which in ancient Greek only meant belly button came to signify the center of the world, just as the navel is the center of the body. Eventually it came to mean the center of anything, but I liked it and took it as a name because politically I am a centrist.

Its also the name of a cool ship in Phillip K. Dick's book The Unteleported Man.

Geez, step away from the keyboard for a few hours and I miss all the fun.

Is that Alia from MySpace? Hey, Lady!

Avatar pix and user names, huh?

I made the "TechnoBug" one on some website I've since misplaced the URL for. Since the one I first started using is an image I grabbed from the Web, it's use is really a copyright violation, so I wanted something that was uniquely mine in case anyone ever calls me on the first one.

As for the user name, went I first visited the old, lousy-boardware BBS they had over on Dune Novels, I was kinda put off by all the people who were using names from the books. (I hope that doesn't offend anyone. [quickly checks Memberlist link]) I kinda already knew I was gonna be a gadfly, but that's not very evocative of Dune, so the first thing that came to mind was "sand chigger". I looked around and found that a guy name of Bryce had already used it, but it looked at the time like most of his accounts had been inactive for a while, so I swiped it. (Turns out he had just been occupied with other things and eventually "returned"; sent me a funny "I'M SANDCHIGGER, DAMMIT!" email on Myspace. :) )

My name is Mandy, I am a member of so many boards I just thought it would be nice to use my RL nickname. Most everyone here knows me as Ninti, from WSFH.

I put my avatar together at http://www.tektek.org/dream/dream.php for a story that is being written about the members of the Flat Earth Society. I understand, my dear bug. It's quite the clever little name. I always think it's weird to take one of the book names too...which is why i always feel weird going on a Dune website without a pseudonym. I was actually reading the Dune group on myspace for quite a while before joining because...well.

But, since I was on myspace for OTHER reasons (Chig: "What other reasons could there possibly be??"), I wasn't going to change my handle just to post (hence my "no it really is my name and I'm not just a poser, really" warnings).

But, of course, now that ya'll know I'm me (except only Chig and Op would have cared) I gotta find some new, clever, sensational tagline for my ole signiture field here. Damn... and me fresh out of brain cells.

Matter will be the eighth Culture book, since State of the Art is a single book (despite being a collection of short stories). But you can count it either way. I still need to finish Inversions and Look To Winward. My problem is I keep reading Player of Games, Consider Phlebas and Use of Weapons over and over again :)

Uh oh, I've got a reputation :) Well, I hope to have more fun here than I did in my later period of activity over at DN. A shame about that website, but that's life.

Keira Knightley in ATONEMENT based on the book by Ian McEwan which I thoroughly enjoyed. Sadly it is in limited release around 300 screens at the moment so it looks like those of us out in the boonies will have to wait for dvd to see it.

The distributor is playing up the Oscar buzz. The film had already made back all of its budget overseas before opening in the US so there isn't much of a push to maximize gross. Its also very British in its dealings with class and class relations something Americans have difficulty with grasping I've found, we as a country seem to turn everything class related into sex or gender.

I liked him in Children, but I have this silly image of him roaring like a lion in the last scene, and that still cracks me up.

He's a really good actor and might be on the verge of main stream stardom. He has his own film this year, a big blockbuster action flick. I'm hoping it won't suck because I'm an action film junkie, but good on McAvoy for landing the bucks. He deserves it more than most (yes Cruise, that was a dig against you).

Hi Mandy!! 8)

GP, You'll love There Will Be Blood, a mate in New York got to see an advance screening with a Q and A with PTA And Daniel Day-Lewis afterword and he loved the film.He knows how picky I am as well and we talk film a lot (his grandfather was William Redfield) and he said the movie hits all the right notes.

If you haven't see No Country for Old Men. Excellent movie with an ending that really screws with Hollywood formula.

Also Macavoy was in Last King of Scotland and held his own against Forrest Whitaker. He's a fine actor who has a promising career yet to come.

Gah! I can't know that!

Robspierre
I've got mixed feelings about Paul Thomas Anderson's films. However, I think There Will Be Blood looks great and I'll take any chance I can get to see Daniel Day Lewis act. The script itself sounds unapologetically brutal and many have made comparisons to Taxi Driver for the immorality of it's main character. It sounds like just the kind of film I like. Must see it.

I've heard nothing but great things about No Country For Old Men as well. I also like Miller's Crossing and Fargo, great Cohen films. I'll check it out.

Cohen Bros films are great. I though Miller's Crossing dragged though. But my favorite scene in that movie was when the mook was driven up to the boarding house and he was telling his driver to use cold water on a razor blade for a closer shave. Two minutes later he was a dead man. I thought that was a pretty brilliant way of showing how mundane death can be.

He really reminds me of this Scottish guy I dated, who was equally hot and a great shag. He was an arrogant prick and really mouthy, but that's the sort of guy I tend to go for. I used to love it when he wore his kilt.

I really like Jason Reitman's directing. He's a solid talent that I'm going to watch for again and again. I've absolutely loved both of his last two films, Juno and Thank You For Smoking. The characters and dialog are just top notch and the stories are both very interesting dramatically.

He is indeed. He's done a string of funny short films, but Thank You For Smoking and Juno are his first features. So I'm not surprised you may not have seen his stuff, since he's relatively new on the scene. I'd definitely encourage you to watch both those films. They are quality productions.

I was actually referring to the Evil Emperor. I recall the rumor that he threw his weight around and got her nude scene pulled.

Oh, my mistake. I don't know if that rumor is true, but it wouldn't surprise me. Cruise has definitely gone off the deep end and his religious moral presumption strikes me as true to form.

Welcome! I told you I would never delete your account. By the way, we dont have too many rules around here. So if you get in over your head, be sure to ask for help!

Really, I have to ask. Why are you here? Common sense would tell me that this is the last place you would wish to come, given recent events. Are you here to make trouble? Or perhaps to apologize and make peace?

Posted: Mon Jan 07, 2008 2:34 pm

Peace offering, I suppose... I would appreciate not being flamed or complained at for admin decisions I make at Arrakeen.

I post my troublemaking snarks at SandChigger's.

But if you allow anti-KJA/BH snarks here, I've got lots to share. Some of it I don't post at Arrakeen because I can predict Byron's reaction: a spitting mad PM, screaming at me about insulting his family, etc.

Such a shame you can't install custom smileys here... :P

Anyway, enjoy:

I don't; sloeman was an idot.

I do miss Byron, but he's just too close to the business to run an unfettered forum. But like I've always said, official websites are junk and always have been. It doesn't matter if it's Dune, Star Wars, or Martha-fucking-Stewart, official websites are extensions of the business and will ALWAYS have an agenda that conflicts with the needs of fans to express their own opinions.

The real, worthwhile action has always been at the fan sites.

Hi, everyone :) I'm Ragabash, Omphalos' little brother. I maintain and host this and his other web sites. He's forcing me at gunpoint to contribute to the site, so Hi. :D

I'm not much of a Dune fan, although I've read the first novel. I'm more into other SF authors, like Iain Banks and Lovecraft. But, I hope to contribute to the site anyway.

I did the math one day. For a 25 year old person, if you take the amount of money that one typically spends on Starbucks every day, and subtracted the amount that it costs to make coffee at home, with cream and sugar, then invested the difference at 8%, by the time you retire you would have an additional $158,000 in your retirement account. Ive seen others do the math and come up with $500K before too.

Industrial-strength Mandheling in the morning. (Bint & I both like something stiff to get us going...ahem! ) I get my beans from a place called Mame Koubou (The Bean Factory) in downtown Iwaki, run by a guy named Aoyama ("Blue Mountain"...how great a name for a coffee seller is that?! :D ).

I take along a Starbucks carcup-full on the road with me down to the office. During the day, I get hot lemon tea or green tea in cans out of the vending machine in the Humanities Bldg lobby. (I used to make coffee or tea, but with the shared office sitch, it's just too much of a pain. Can't wait to get back into an office of my own...come March or April.)

In the evening, it's either soft drinks or tea. :D

(Off-topic: The office sitch is one of the main reasons Teg and I haven't been doing more podcasts. The rennovations also mean that there aren't any free classrooms for us to hijack, either. But stay tuned! ;) )

Bit melodramatic don't you think? It's no slippery slope and news flash, not everyone in authority is an undisciplined, power hungry, attention seeking cat person. I'm sure you'd do fine. I'm really pissed off at Starbucks Japan. They've got three shops in Kohriyama, inland from here, but can't be fooked to open one here in Iwaki.

Down in Mito, there are two or three, but they're all WAY off my route coming or going. (Getting down to the one by the station is a nightmare. I really don't get it, after we did them the favor of clearing all the urban sprawl during the war, what do they do but rebuild with the same crazy castle-town roads. Argh!)

But Teg put me on to one in Hitachi-Naka yesterday, that I could swing by on my way home. Maybe I'll check it out tomorrow (today). :)

I usually drink coffee, but lately I've been feeling a bit under the weather, so I've been drinking a tea concoction I came up with at work. It's a mixture of Green and Peppermint teas with a splash of Irish Cream Syrup and Half&Half. Tonight, though, I wish I had some real Irish Cream  I'm closing tonight and going straight from work to volunteer at the local Rocky Horror Picture Show. I'll be lucky if I get home by 3 A.M. Maybe if it's slow tonight we'll get a couple of beers at the local convenience store to make work more bearable

Well, in all fairness, Starbucks is great in Japan, but I pretty much stayed away from SB back in the states, unfortunately all the great local cafes have pretty much closed down.

Tully's and Seattle's Best are here as well.

Starbucks pretty much owns all the train stations, and Tully's is very strong in the business districts leaving Seattle's Best to scramble for the crumbs. I think Seattle's Best is the best, but Tully's marketing approach has all but knocked out Seattle's Best.

No problem. BTW, loved the comment about the Dutch translations of the new books that Chig referenced in a post recently. Something about them taking so long to be published there because the translators were laughing too hard as they read them in English! Classic!

But really, thanks to Chig for putting up the announcement directing members from the latest Scattering to End All Scatterings on his blog, as well as anyone else who has spread the word of this place.

I'm beginning to think I should have called this forum Carthag, or the Pyon Villages, so I could collect those who flee from the fallen Atreides capitol.

Howdy howdy!

Got wind from a nameless member I know from other board(s). Another I know and a few screenies I recognize. Now just as soon as I figure out all the acronyms I may be able to weigh in on something.

I'm a scifi/fantasy geek who thinks that Dune is probably the greatest book ever written (although GEoD is my favorite of the cannon), that I embarrass myself that I even know who Kevin J Anderson is, that Battlestar Galactica is greater than sliced bread, and that Kate and Juliette need to get it on. BUT THAT'S JUST ME!

Oh, and cursing is allowed here, which is bitchin' (how 70's was that?!)

As I think said over at Jacurutu, I'm a long time lurker and enjoy your converstaions. I thought I was well versed in sci-fi before I start lurking here. Wow, I got some reading to do. I hope I can keep up.

If you can't tell by the name, I'm a big Star Wars fan. My wife calls it an obsession but I disagree (her problem anyway, she married me :D) I realize it is not nearly as deep or complicated as Dune is, but it's still my passion and I make no apologies for it.

Anyway, nice to meet you all and I look forward to talking with you.

You really should talk to Mastah B then. The BT now have a full line of sphincteral enhancements that will REALLY blow your mileage out the door! I don't know where I'd be without the turbo minijets they installed in two of my sphincters.

Why, they even helped me come first place in last month's Spring TriAsslon! :P

But I'm sure that Hyppothalamic, were she able to post here, would tell us that someone used it in a book somewhere, somewhen before. ;)

I watched "2001" for the 2nd time at a Friday "midnight movie" on campus at UI in 1974. The people that attended were either coming home from the bars drunk, or high and had nothing else to do. I was in the latter group IIRC.

At the end of the movie when HAL is being dismantled, he starts singing "Daisy" and then describes his birthplace at Urbana Illinois. The entire auditorium wakes up, and erupts in pandemonium.

Sweet memories...

I'm big into Illini basketball, and I like the new Mizzou basketball coach Anderson. When he gets his own players in he will bring back the program.

Baseball ain't my sport, but I was a Cubs fan at one point in my life, which explains why I don't follow baseball anymore.

Speaking of Quinny Snyder, did you follow his firing a couple of years ago? The Mizzou AD Alden had the team radio announcer tell him he was fired. Alden almost got fired himself after that story came out.

Sports? Ha ha ha ha ha.

Keep waiting.

I was never athletically gifted and soon learned to avoid any sort of sport activity. (I was the kid who was always the last one picked when choosing teams, the one that provoked Richter-Scale groans when the gym class teacher MADE a team take me.) I'll go and watch a game or match if invited, and I had season football tickets with a bunch of friends my sophomore (or was it my junior?) year at State, but I really just went for the company, laughs, and the band show at halftime. AND the flasks we snuck in under our coats. ;)

To this day I have no idea how a football game is even scored; couldn't explain the rules of the game if my life depended on it. Something about touching down and dance-prancing around? And something called yardage? About all I know about football is the word means soccer in the civilized world and

WE DON'T GIVE A DAMN FOR THE WHOLE STATE OF MICHIGAN,
WHOLE STATE OF MICHIGAN, WHOLE STATE OF MICHIGAN!
WE DON'T GIVE A DAMN FOR THE WHOLE STATE OF MICHIGAN,
WE'RE FROM O-HI-O!
:D

(Sorry, Indiana and parts west were never even really on my radar. I did get that we didn't like Michigan, though. ;) )

Just because y'all would sell your firstborn for your local FC to win the CL
doesn't mean you get to monopolize the whole "only we know what good
sports are" pissing match. To me it smacks of a touch of hypocrisy. Us
Yanks are always wooped on for dismissing what we don't understand. If you
think a guy hitting in the 4 spot on a MLB lineup is somehow less skilled than
an elite cricket batsman (terminology?), then you obviously don't understand
baseball. Now, I'll be the first to admit that I know very little about cricket,
but I DON'T go around saying how unimpressive it is that cricket dudes with 6
inch wide oars can hit a bouncing ball. I may WANT to, but I won't say it. :D

Besides, none of it matters as ice hockey is easily the sport with the most
impressive athletes on the planet. By far. If soccer was played with
skates on ice, I might reconsider.

Who was the guy on DN who was the lightning-Minefield player? Was that the guy from Australia who wanted his girlfriend to slap him with a riding crop? Erck, or something?

That pretty much describes all spectator sports in the US, except we have places to sit while we drink.

There's more than one I'm sure, but I'd go for tripple 20, tripple 19, double 20.
ding! ding! ding! we have a winner!

Actually that's the only out (3 dart out, that is).

Oh hell no. Just a rating the website tracks. I'm sure there's a fancy

I had to think about that one for a while, Cricket is my game (I prefer sloppy with points). That's why I'd go for 20s and 19s first. I've played in several bar leagues and tournaments but it's been years. I hope that one day soon I'll be able to afford to join another leaague. It'd be nice just to get out of the house and have a few beers.

I've always loved playing chess, the Indian kid across the street would whip my butt on a daily basis in high school. I wish I could play more but I never seem to have the time.

Ah, therein lies the rub. Honor system. The site admins take it pretty
seriously though and supposedly have methods for finding cheaters, and
they regularly ban people. I have 194 games played since joining and
maybe on two occasions did I suspect a cheat. By and large it's on the up
and up, but I don't deny that people probably cheat.

I don't have an official rating, but I was that guy the chess team got to play random spots on the B team my senior year. I didn't lose a game, but I'm not an incredibly devoted player. I was never serious enough about the game to play A team, but I'm a better player than most of my friends(we're all pretty casual, self-taught players. More intuition than logic in our playstyles). The team captain handed me my ass, though.

I'm an alright player, but nothing special by any means. It's one of my favorite games, but I've never really gotten too serious about it.

Maybe 10 years or so, Yahoo had a chess "club" that kept ratings. I played a few 5 minute games there, and then noticed players that had like 2800 ELO ratings, and one person that had a rating in the 3000's. Turned out there was a hack that allowed people to move the opponents pieces around (amongst others).

I never played there again, figuring the hackers can hack each other.

Do any of you chess players ever play "team chess"?

Me and a guy back in HS used to go to various clubs in the Chicago area, and play for quarters against all takers. Two on a team, two boards, alternating color. If you take a piece on one board, you give it to your partner, who can then place it anywhere on his board as his "move". 5 minute clock game. It also helped that my buddy was around a 1900 rating in the 1970's.

Typical strategy would be to sacrifice like crazy on one board, and chop wood on the other. Many games came down to which team had the most time left, since if mate was forced on one board, he would stop moving, and whichever board had the most time left won (or had to continue alone as a normal game).

We had several "book" attacks and strategies. I remember games like 1. Nf3 any 2. Ng5 any 3. Nxf7 and then slamming down everything but the kitchen sink at black, mating shortly.

Ever play cylindrical chess?

Freakzilla wrote:Ever play cylindrical chess?
I had to google it, never heard of it before.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cylinder_chess
The game is played as if there is no edge on the side of the board. When a piece goes off the right edge of the board in cylinder chess, it reappears on the left edge; when a piece goes off the left edge, it reappears on the right edge.[2]

It is legal to move a rook from a3 to h3, even if there is a piece on b3, since the rook can move left from a3. A bishop on c1 can go to h4, by moving from c1 to a3, and then going up and left from a3 to h4. Moves that do not change the position, like rook a3-a3 (assuming 3rd rank is empty), are usually not allowed, but sometimes they are in some problems. It is allowed to capture en passant over the board edge. For example, if white has a pawn on a5, black on h7 and black plays h7-h5, white can capture it: a5xh6.

Bishops are more valuable in this variant. And, unlike in standard chess, king and rook cannot enforce checkmate against the lone king on the cylindrical board.

Have you ever played it? Seems pretty easy to learn, although it would take a few games to adjust to the new rules.

I'm up for trying it out if there are any sites that have it. Phaedrus? Star Dust? Chigger?

Don' look at me, Boss!

Other than the OS X Chess app, I haven't even played normal chess in oh, a good six or seven years. (Used to get together back then for a game about once a month with a German guy here in town who taught parttime at the same school I used to work at, but he had to return to Germany for six months—his kids were in school there and he and his wife alternated being with them half of the year—and after he came back we didn't pick up with our games again.) :(

Go or mahjiang are more my speed now! :P

My art teacher called that "bughouse." Except we didn't time the games, and if checkmate was made on one board, the losing team lost the entire game.

You see a lot more piece trades in bughouse, I notice.

Subah al Noor ! Hi everyone ! :D

How rude am I ? didn't see this thread till today. Long time lurker, 2nd time poster. I have discovered this forum thanks to Sandchigger  and my friend Leto...and the great list of Dune secondary sources by Omphalos (in Worms Sci fi Haven Forum).

Some of you may know me from Facebook or Myspace...& for those of you who don't, I enjoy SF, Hard Rock, Monty Python's, Kafka, Orwell, Lynch, Nietzsche, Thoreau, Borat ! ... !!crazy!!

....AND DUNE of course !!! I'm a Dunalcoholic talifan, and I'm proud to be ! !!crazy!!

As David Miller said, Herbert is certainly "an author who follows the same metaphysical questions in sequential books". He investigates and re-explores a whole gallery of topics, approaching them from different perspectives and in various permutations.

That's why I'm a great fan of all herbertian stuff (novels, short stories, poems, articles, scripts, audio-books...)...and many apocryphas (McNelly, Lynch, Jodo, Schoenherr, Iron Maiden, Giger...)...

Me and some herbertians froggies are involved in many projects :
* a french -annotated- translation of the DE (almost finished) ,
* a computer Concordance of the FH's Hexalogy (with stats, synopsis and lexicography - project in progress) ,
* a bilingual bibliographic database of FH's works and Duniverse (with quotes, links, images, reviews and analysis - project in progress, 1st lists on The Almost Undeleted)),
* an interactive (multimedia) quiz (plans),
* some sociological studies (about fandom, SF writing, cyberculture, game design, virtual communities, "xeno-encyclopedia"....: plans again, some synopsis in progress.)
Etc..Etc...Etc... Crazy, isn't it ? French....! !!crazy!! crazy!! !!crazy!!
It's just a beginning (except for the translation) and I hope share many ideas with you.
[ It's a beginning, very modest but we have faith on Orthodoxy ! Damn the Preeks ! Unfortunately, with the copyright stuff and HLP, you can't see nothing in public (hidden threads). You must register and apply for add (like the Sand's projects here).]

As Leto247 says :" I must warn you of one thing: if sometimes you see that what i´m saying doesn´t make sense you must not think it is due my almost-forgotten english notions. It sure will be an elaborated zensunni koan designed to open your mind !!!"

Very, very, very glad to be included among the ranks of Orthodox Herbertians. Looks like this is the new place to be. Nice to meet you all and I look forward to talking with you.

Obviously my water belongs to the tribe of the O.H.J. !

Greetings!

I'm Duke (yes, it's a nickname ... no, I never tell anyone my given name) from lovely Reno, Nev., a strange (but mostly pretty cool) little burg on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

My interests include quality literature, cycling and other lung-busting activities, family stuff, and sexing the wife up every so often. My hobbies include mocking Kevin J. Anderson and The Other Guy relentlessly and fervently wishing they would both take a one-way trip to Neptune. I find it therapeutic to occasionally post my feelings about Anderjacket and Bobo at http://www.jacurutu.com.

I've almost signed up here like 15 times over the past year or so ... not sure why I didn't. Other than pure laziness, of course.

RFD-TV runs 2 episodes of Hee-Haw every week - each episode is shown 3 times
during the week, too, so if you didn't get "finished" when Loretta or Tayna Tucker
was on, you got another coupla chances ....

Junior Samples was the best redneck comic ever; Larry the Cable Guy
(aka Dan Whitney) is a rank amateur in comparison .... but after what
happened to Stringbean, it's a little weird and depressing to see him ...

and Duke:
'bout time.

That settles it, then. Between the shit weather (I'm fucking tired of living in a place with NO CENTRAL HEATING) and shit job and shit TV (seriously, almost everything I watch is American or European TV anyway) and lack of political humor (in a country whose government is crying out to be laugh-raped) AND NO HEE-HAW, I'm ready to come home.

"Knothead"?

Yeah, pure laziness. Omph mentioned it to me a handful of times over the past few weeks/months. Finally, it reached the top of the "Shit That Should Get Done" list. Oh, and I was embarrassed about missing the whole attempted sting on Prester Idiot. Big "duh" on that one.

I can't see it - I'm using whatever the dark skin is ...
just like that other board, the admins are too busy ordering snobby scotch online
and searching for semi-nude photos of underaged starlets to give us a choice in
the appearance ... oh no, wait, that's Microsoft Engineers ....

[edit]
also: why does the author of this thread read "Hyppo" ?
I thought the word-filter was set to render Hyppo as "Hyppo" ...
does that only apply to text ?
[/edit]
[edit_2]
this is interesting ... if you "quote" my post, Hyppo is rendered as Hyppo in the post-reply box ...
but if I "edit" my own post, Hyppo still appears as "Hyppo" in the edit-post box ...
[/edit_2]

I don't think italicizing it is doing what you want it to do. Either way, that's a mess 'o' Hyppos.

Hey everyone, just saying "hi" for a second time. I've been around Jacurutu for almost a year, albeit a not very active member. Got a pretty busy life with PhD in sight, and besides I feel like a Dune newbie around people like you. I have only read the whole series once and rereading it right now (CoD presently), with the exception of Dune which I've gone through three times. I've also been collecting & learning about FH stuff out there and hopefully some of my knowledge could be useful to this community. As matter of fact, I'll start a new thread regarding D:V which I found out more about at the library of congress in DC. I happen to live virtually next door to that library, so if somebody wants my assistance in looking of up stuff there, don't hesitate to ask. It's one of the largest libraries in the world with lots and lots of resources.

Thanks, and by all means, yeah just ask.
However, I should have mentioned that my life is pretty turbulent and I will only remain in DC until end of May, with a strong possibility to move back in August or September. So please ask me sooner than later. :)=

Hi, and welcome. I was born and raised in DC. I used to use the LoC just like a school library when I was in high school and college. It is a remarkable system, isn't it.

Yeah, I love the library. Very helpful & friendly staff. Jefferson building is the most beautiful building that I've seen at least on this side of the great pond. The exhibitions are stunning! A pretty unknown gem to most tourists coming here..

I graduated from George Mason University. My dad was a GW law grad and taught there for a bit too. Nice campus. Sometimes I really miss the culture of that town, then I think of the weather and smile over the fact that I am now away from it.
