Its been years and years since I went to a con. Back when I lived on the East Coast. But my favorite part of any con was the dealer room. There was just so much cool crap in those dealer rooms, even if the guests were minor and/or I didnt care.

Did I just lose more than a month and a half or is the counter on the bottom of the Confluence 2008 page wrong?

Or, for them, is every day the Fourth of July? :D

Oh, yeah...Star Wars collectibles?

Sorry, sounds more like something up "Oh, Spice Planet wasn't THAT bad" Crypto-Preeq Hyppo's alley. ;)

Conventions in August 2008. There's a bunch, and some of you are near some.

Anyone who goes to a convention is urged to do a con report here. Ill give you a cookie if you do, and give a noogie to whomever you don't like.

And guess who's going to be there!

I wonder if he wrote his own blurb:
He has written original novels SLAN HUNTER (a completion of SF grand-master A.E. van Vogt?s last novel), HOPSCOTCH, CAPTAIN NEMO, THE MARTIAN WAR, BLINDFOLD, RESURRECTION, INC., and with Doug Beason, the thrillers ILL WIND and IGNITION (both with Doug Beason).
Nice grammar.

I almost made a similar joke myself, but thought, "Nah...that's the sort of hyperbole THEY would put in one of their books."

Supercharged by the power he obtained from chewing on the residue of long depleted family atomics, Chigger visited Kevin's "blog" on Dune Novels several thousand times a day...while quadrillions of neurons were killed in the brains of fanboys slavering away over copies of the new books around the world....

Well, of course a still-suit, but that would be hard. I think if you have the important things, like a crys knife and jubba cloak, you can cover up pretty well. maybe a Fremkit on your back with some poles?

SF conventions for September, 2008

Some good stuff there, though it looks a bit like things are slowing down. We have our annual book show here in Sacramento, and although there are all kinds of books and dealers, I'd say in years past its at least 50-60% SF and related genre stuff that is for sale there.

Why is the Southeast so neglected when it comes to cons?

Anime Weekend Atlanta and Games Day Memphis are the only things that are close to me, and neither's high up on my list of conventions to attend. How sad.

There's DragonCon, I guess. But eh, I'm not sure if I want to get that close to KJA.

In Japan, or stateside?

Because from what I hear, Japan is basically an endless Con in itself.

Stateside.

Japan is an endless con, in and of itself.

It's a wonder the damned archipelago doesn't sink from the pure density of the stoneheads around here.

FUCK FUCK FUCK.

I just discovered that in preparation for renovation of the small classroom annex building next door during second semester, they've cut down all four of the pine trees in the atrium in the center. I knew that's what the assholes would do...and sure enough. They've also cut down six or sever really nice shade trees around the periphery. Probably so they can get their machinery in and all. I almost hope that there is a thing like karma at work in the universe and these asshats get double their fair share.

If anyone ever dares waffle on at you about the wonder of Japanese gardens and the skills and love of the Japanese for Nature, tell 'em to blow it out the other end, that shit's all several hundred years in the past. All these shitheads seem to know how to do these days is CUT CUT CUT.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I see a shit load of upcoming cons in the Mid West, and more than a few in the Mid-Atlantic too. A few Down Under as well, but as usual, there is only one in the West, and I could care less about Peter Beagle.

Too bad the one in Vic looks like a gamerscon, otherwise I'd head to the island. I haven't seen anything even resembling a good convention out here yet.

Here is the list of upcoming cons for March 2009. I see one in Sacto. Wonder what it is about? Something in Toronto too. Everything else looks pretty remote to us.

Whoops! I'm late! Here is a list for conventions coming up in April of 2009.

I think Ill try to swing by the Norwestcon in SeaTac, Washington. That convention is sponsored by a local group like NESFA, though not as big. I'd like to meet a few of those guys and gals.

If anyone in the UK is going to EasterCon, I would love it if you would take some pics and post a convention report here. I've never been there for that big, big con, but I would love to go some day. Tim Powers is there this year. I have so much shit I want him to sign! He was a friend of McNelly's too, IIRC.

I see two cons in Minnesota, something that looks huge in Florida, something at Bally's in Vegas, several in Toronto, and a whole host of others across the continent and in the UK.

May cons.

That first con in Atlanta is for gay and lesbians conventioneers. Don't think I have ever seen a gay themed con before.

I see one in Ft. Lauderdale.

Where the fuck is Cantil, CA?

Winnipeg. Or is that someone on the other board?

Mobile. I think we have someone from there. Dune Nerd?

Wiscon is a major feminist SF con.

June cons.

Looks like not too much. SFRA in Atlanta. Wish I could go to that.

I almost made it to FinnConn in Tampere, Finland one year. Wish I had gone.

One in Toronto. Looks like a TV con, with lots of ST. Hmmm.

I went to Shore Leave a long time ago. I had fun.

Ive heard great things about Mythcon in L.A.

One in Jacksonville, Mandy.

One in Minneapolis.

Wichita too. Don't we have a few from round them parts.

I just joined the SFRA. That cost me $80 alone. I have been talking to a lot of people on line about the legal/SF stuff I am working on and every one of them said that I should join because I will meet a lot of people with similar interests. Plus I'd really like to teach a course on SF one day, and I am told by many, including James Gunn, one of the pre-eminent SF scholars alive today, that the SFRA is the place to be for that too.

As for the conference, I will go one day when it comes out west. Its not a typical con. They present a lot of papers and have discussion panels on some pretty dry stuff. But I find all of that interesting.

December, 2009 Cons.

Things are starting to look pretty bleak on the con front. I have been paying little attention to this lately, but I wonder if the dearth of cons has to do with the economy? Probably, as I recall a lot more cons in Dec, 2008.

They give an annual award (the Pilgrim Award) for the best non-fiction genre book yearly. They are pretty good at picking good ones, but even the nominees are worth a look too.

Just saw in the 09/09 copy of Locus (p.11) that the 69th Annual Worldcon is going to be in Reno, NV. I know its kinda early, but I am already totally stoked for this. Reno is only 90 minutes or so from me, so I'm going, and Ragabash and I are going to get a hotel room. August 17-21 at the Reno/Sparks convention center. The Atlantis will be the party hotel. Not sure where we are going to stay yet, but probably the Atlantis. Guests so far include Tim Powers (Yea!), Boris Vallejo (eh?), Ellen Asher (who?) and Charles Brown (who is dead, so explain that one to me. Seance?). Gonna see you all there, right? :D

January, 2010 conventions. Again, not too much going on. One in Mass that looks interesting, and a bunch of Creation cons. Eh?

I wonder if there is a better source out there for European cons? I'll look around for one.

Some interesting cons coming up in May, 2010. It's been some time since I have seen this many cons in one month. Can't be that the economy has recovered that much. Must be because it's springtime!!!

UFOfest looks like a big tin-foil hat fest, especially since they have no contact information. Guess the trailer park has no phone cable strung.

One in Birmingham, AL. I think that we have a user from Mobile. Quite a ways, but maybe worth a long drive.

Phoenix Comicon looks gigantic.

WisCon is a noteworthy feminist convention. Never been but I'd like to go one day.

I used to go to Balticon when I lived back east; at least when I was a kiddo. That was a good one.

Timegate, in Atlanta, Freak. Call Eru up and offer to buy him a beer!
