sorting out stuff

Post by D Pope »

If one wanted to categorize anything in Dune, or any other book for that matter,
what basic elements would one use besides DESCRIPTIONS & DIALOG?

For example; at the end of chapter 17 (or there about) Jessica has confronted Hawat
and now employs her endgame,
I am the bull and she the matador, Hawat thought. He withdrew his
hand from the weapon, glanced at the sweat glistening in his empty palm.
And he knew that whatever the facts proved to be in the end, he
would never forget this moment nor lose this sense of supreme ad-
miration for the Lady Jessica.
'Bull & Matador, Hawat thought.' To me, thoughts are dialog.
'...whatever...supreme admiration for the Lady Jessica.' Works as a description.
'He withdrew and looked at his sweaty hand.' ... Action? What? Other?

I'm not really counting sweaty under DESCRIPTIONS, i'm hoping for another
category or two to describe every question one could ask of a book.
When a brand knew urinal puck showed up in the bathroom of my studio, I knew what I had to do.

Never really thought about it that much.

Well, there's scene setting.

In stage plays we talk about pacing and blocking.

I don't think "movement cues" would categorize the situation to which I believe you are referring.

Not much help tonight am I? Sorry.
I shall lift up my eyes unto the glory of the Lord.
