Questions for the British fans

I belong to a few UK run boards. For the most part they are pretty busy, but I tell you what, I've never been cold-shouldered more than I am at those places. I don't mind too much; I think my skin is thick enough, but it seems pretty regular that people just kind of pass right over my posts and ignore them. I've been posting there for a while and I figured it was just because I wasn't in the "in crowd," but lately it's occurred to me that I ain't ever gonna be. If that's the case, I really dont want to bother trying any more.

US fans had reputations long ago of being really group centered and having tough shells to crack. I guess what I'm asking is, is it me or is it them? I know internet boards are different than real life, but I'm just wondering if UK fans are regarded as being really cliquey or not.

Thanks,

I don't know about online but in real life they're rude as hell.

Shouldn't you be asking Tanz this one? :)

He's one of the few I like over there. But he's "in too deep" as it were. I'm starting to feel that if I'm going to talk to him, it should probably be at his blog, because that board really kind of sucks. Which is weird for a SFF board that is so active.

The on line fan community is just so weird. Ive really been thinking lately that I should just start a local SF group or something.

I don't have a broad BBS/forum base of experience. I only post on 3 boards, all of them U.S. based and run. Brits are pricks, Euros are pricks, people are pricks. The internet/distanced/impersonal communication can bring out the worst in people and if allowed becomes habitual.

Here have a :D.

It just seemed to me that was the way people were over there. Maybe it was because I was American. I was offended at first but got used to it because everyone did it. For example, after buying something in a store the cashier wouldn't say something nice like, "thanks, come again," it was usually "hurry up, people are waiting."

Yeah, sometimes people aren't being rude, that's just the way they do things. And sometimes they're being rude.

Ive personally never, ever had anything but great interactions with British people in the UK fact-to-face. Even most of the drunk ones. Though that does not apply to British people outside of the UK. They're a bunch of wankers then.

I've never had any experiences with British people bad enough to damage my abiding Anglophilia. :D

My brother is a major gamer, and ran into the same kind of problem when he moved west to live in Sac. Back east he found them to be really open and friendly. Out here in Sac the opposite was the case. A bunch of "closeted misanthropes" I think he called them.

Oh well. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Guess Ill never realize my dream of being a British fan or a Russian ballerina. :(=

Most British people can't be arsed with Americans. Or anyone else who isn't British. We even hate each other, come to think of it.

I've never been to the "real America", only poncey Boston and NYC, but even there the portions were so big they actually made my stomach hurt.

It's also essential to get at least 7% of your calories from soda. That's what really gives you the American food experience.

(I love that stat, I'm going to have to verify it someday if I want to keep repeating it so much!)

I know what you mean, every time I go home for a visit. I did much better once I understood you're not expected to eat everything; that's what doggy-bags are for! :P

I only say that because it's one of the excuses the kids use to not eat all their meal. They'll take a few bites and say, "My tummy hurts!" I give them the tiniest of portions, too.

LOL! No pain, no gain! I couldn't spend my life eating all that crap, I even wimped out and ordered a salad at one point which was the size of a termite mound! :shock=:

Well, you're such a ribey little thang, they probably figured you were one of them Vegan nutters and tried to fill you up on something they thought you would eat.

Look in the mirror. :P

Um... we DON'T use it in the sense it comes up with on Urban Dictionary. Nasty.

It means "thin, insubstantial; looks like could be blown away by medium strong wind." Ribey. (RYE-bee)

Unless you've put on a lot of weight again? :?

I was wondering if that's where it originally came from!

But the change in pronunciation is weird, huh? You'd think it should be more like "ribby" in that case.

Oh well, still beats "in depther"!

Weird, I didn't read carefully and just assumed "ribey" was a typo, and everyone meant "ribby". We say "ribby" up here, pronounced so that it makes sense as "skinny". I've never even hear the word "rye-bee"... :? :? :?

CL - do you guys have it as ribby over there, or just nothing at all?

No, ribby isn't a word here. Scrawny is one word I've heard used, but I prefer "lean" LOL.
