New Dune Forum - www.jacurutu.com

Post by Omphalos »

There is a new Dune forum out there, that is set up to be straight Dune talk in a way that the admins at Arrakeen and DN totally missed. Give it a shot right away, and feel free to join, no matter what side you sympathize with.

Very cool, see you there:)
Look, I'm not much good at big speeches, and I know I haven't always been an easy guy to get on with, and I know, that given the choice, I wouldn't have chosen you as friends, but I just want to say, that over the years, I have come to regard you as people I met.

SO has it been decided what the mandate of the new forum is and what is to become of this forum?
"What are we to call him, this Player of Games?"

Mandate: Discuss Dune.

This forum will remain as it is as far as I know.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but doesn't this forum already meet that criteria? What is the point of yet another forum? And why maintain this forum if this new forum is supposed to be where we're all discussing Dune?

I only toyed with the idea of deeply discussing Dune, and I offered space here for Freak to run several Dune threads. But it didn't work out, and now Freak has started his board. I'm still going to focus on SF in general, and this place will still be a haven for those who do not suck. And I'm going to support Freak as much as I possibly can, because if anyone can run an excellent Dune board, its him.

What "didn't work out" about it here? I think we've just been fussing more, temporarily, over the crap at Arrakeen. But that's dying down now, however much Hype is trying to keep the controversy alive in the comment threads on my blog posts.

I assume it's OK to keep the concordance and speculative forums here, right? I hope to do some real work on the Galach one once I get grades and term-end stuff finished and we're into spring vacation.

You know, with our tendency to derail discussions and post whatever where ever, I don't know how well this is going to work. To me and as of right now, The Almost Undeleted and Jacurutu are virtually identical forums with an identical mandate (and I'm not talking about colors). Unless the AU is suddenly restructured, I'm not feeling any need to post new topics and discussions on another forum just for kicks. I also certainly don't want to start double posting everything I do.

I agree that a separate section for our group is a good idea. But if we want a haven for our group, why not just setup a private user group in Jacurutu attached to a single sub-forum? Simple.

If we don't want to do that for whatever reason (perhaps the more paranoid of us like the idea of an off-site location) then we really should reduce this message board down to one or two forums. Otherwise, there's really no incentive for me to move my activity to yet another forum.

Perhaps I'm just not getting it. Doesn't anyone else find this kinda odd? At the very least, for too redundant? :? :? :?

I'm assuming that Freak's reading group forums will all be moved to the new BBS. While having a mirror here is a nice idea, in practical terms it would be a PITA to keep up. If you remove those, the only specifically Dune-related content would be the "Dune Talk" forum and my shtuff.

So the "mandate" here is general SciFi discussion, and that of Jacurutu Dune and pretty much Dune only. (Plus fun things here like Hype- and Nudies-bashing.)

At least that's the way I'm ordering it in my mind for now. ;)

All I meant was that I never got off my butt and added more topics. I never really got inspired to get deep discussions of Dune going. Not that anything failed.

I think its important to remember here that Freakzilla wants to have his own forum that he can run the way he wants to run it. I consider Freak my friend, and will do what I can to help him get it off the ground and become a success. Am I concenred that people will pick his over mine and attendance/posting will die off over here? Yes. But Im more convinced that I can think of interesting things to do over here that Freak wont be doing. Like the fables thread. And Ill always do my book reviews. And we will always be our own little community without Preeks running around. And I still have my sites on convincing GamePlayer to moderate and run a topic on cinema. I think that there is a gold mine there of interesting topics. Im also preparing a huge thread on copyright. Ive been doing legal research on it for two months, and while its not close to being done, I think its going to be pretty interesting, especially to this group.

I really hope you all stay active here. Freak and I are not running the same forum. Will there be some overlap? Probably. But things will iron out soon enough. Though I personally cant wait to see what happens when arnoldo or hymaintenance tries to register over there.

Absolutely. I want to be involved in all that stuff too. And it should stay where it was started, I think.

What is "PITA?"

I was thinking of bumping your stuff up above it, since the chapter reviews are going to be read only for good. Or maybe it would be a good idea to just move them off-site altogether (they were originally put here because we didnt trust the board at Arrakeen. Seems a good idea to keep them though, just in case).

I wanted my own place to discuss Dune. Take it or leave it. I'm not asking anyone to leave here and post there. If you want to seriously discuss Dune topics you are all welcome at Jacurutu.

I will continue to post my reading group in both places so I have a back up.

You can hide it totally if you want, I just thought it would be a good idea to have it in two places... but they're both on the same server aren't they?

I still like to read them sometimes without all the bullshit preek comments they tend to get. We can see how much use they get in the next few weeks then decide if we still want them visible. Yet it seems like the concensus is that its overkill. Anyone else wish to chime in? Ears here are open!

and yes, they do seem to be on the same server. Hmmm.

I just had a thought, can I make the replies for the reading group forum go through moderator approval? That way I can nip arnoldoloco posts in the bud.

I guess for back-up purposes, having both forums on the same server doesn't do any good, however if someone hacked my site but not this one might do some good.

I will be sure to back-up to my own hard drive, just to be sure.

Just to be clear...

I think having things mirrored as a backup (plus on hard disk) is an extremely wise way of doing things.

What I meant about it being a pain in the ass (sorry, Omph, I thought everyone knew that one :( ) is if you keep both open to posting and try to copy material back and forth to keep both current. You should definitely close one down to new posts, presumably the one here.

Hmmm.

Arnoldo is of Mexican descent and posts from Texas, Fantomas claims to be Cuban, in Florida. Fantomas is posting a lot, but Arnoldo's post activity seems down....

Possible, but my impression from their English abilities is that they're two different people.

(I kinda suspect someone else over there of being Arnoldo, but will say no more at present. ;) )

I knew him from DN and he seemed interested in Dune even if a borderline personality. He's starting to sound like arnoldo's cuban alter ego now.

I sort of feel like he targets me for his crazy rants.. this is the second time he's done that. He's tiresome and ignorant, I feel the urge to kick his ass... but I'll try to be nice. I especially won't argue back in the Dune discussion forums.

I wouldn't say you're being singled out Mandy, but you are replying and thus giving him attention. He's tried to start up with me once or twice and I just ignored him. Also, he was obviously very offended by my mention of the "two girls one cup" internet meme; something I find incredibly hilarious in no small part because of the lack of any direct link or pictures. Meaning he had to go out of his way to do an internet search on his own and then was so offended he posted complaints about it on Jacurutu. That pretty much speaks volumes right there :)

Yes Fantomas, I am responsible for YOUR behaviour

I don't think that's justified nor wise. A good wrist-slapping should do and as a small community, you have to tread carefully at the beginning lest the board be perceived negatively before it's even had a chance to gain ground. Ban only outright abusers and obvious trouble makers, like SC for example  :P

We should send him to Hyppo, she likes the Irwins :)

Omph, I'm pretty sure that most of the time when he's addressing me he is passive aggressively trying to insult me. I noticed out of all the posts regarding the 2girls1cup and the shit involved (lol) he decides to be "disgusted" by my comment that it's chocolate ice cream. There are several other instances where everyone is being silly, but he targets me with one of his snide comments. Maybe he thinks I'm an easy target, because I'm female.

I've tried to cut him some slack because of the language problem, but when he launches an all out attack against me, it's hard to ignore. Like I said, though, I'm not gonna argue with him in the serious forums. Also I'm not going to ask for him to be banned, I can handle anything he throws my way.

I think he is having problems dealing with your nipples, so he acts out.

Trouble with English, targeting female sexuality, high moral ground on the two girls, one cup issue. Sounds like a certain fan-fiction author some of us are "friends" with.

Did TMB ever finish the ones for your back?

(Just wondering.)

I assume (hope) you were still talking about Fantomas there.

But I agree with GamePlayer. I am a troublemaker! Er...no, um, banning someone this early isn't a great idea. (Especially if you were talking about me!)

Smack him, limit his posting temporarily, whatever, but don't ban him unless he simply doesn't get the message and doesn't contribute anything at all to the board.

I agree; it's way too early to pull out the ban stick.

Banning is a bad idea. Why don't we give him a couple of friendly warnings. He does seem to target you Mandi, and I'm certain its because you are female. Next time I catch him in the act, I'll warn him unless Freakzilla says otherwise.

That's cool TMB, I don't want him banned. I really just wanted to know if I was the only person he annoyed :P

No, you're not the only person he annoys. You just seem to be the only one he openly attacks. :(

I'm sure fantomas will be making a formal complaint against me soon, lol. I wonder if he just doesn't realize that he's a twit? Anyway, I think we're done arguing, if he can control himself. I apologize in advance for any troubles he may cause because I spanked him. :)

He got offended by my take on his emoticons and apparently thinks I called him "stupid." Oh well....
