But then again, I would be easy to convince about that, wouldnt I?The B'omarr are not actually a race; rather they were an order of monks whose monastery eventually became Jabba's Palace. They believe that cutting themselves off from civilization and all corporeal distractions leads to enlightenment and to that end undergo surgery to separate their brains from their bodies and continue their existence as a brain in a jar. On the rare occasions when they need to move, they are able to use a spider-like walking apparatus. The B'omarr were still in Jabba's Palace at the time it appears in Return of the Jedi, and indeed, as C-3PO enters Jabba's palace, a spiderwalker can be seen. The monks inhabit the lower part of the palace and allow the various smugglers and crime lords like Jabba to use the upper levels, as long as they add another section to the lower levels for use by the B'omarr. The infamous Bib Fortuna himself eventually (unwillingly) became a monk, as he had sought power through the monks' teachings.

The B'omarr first appeared in Return of the Jedi, in the form of brains attached to spider droids. The droids were based upon sketches by Ralph McQuarrie, which later appeared in The Illustrated Star Wars Universe. Although they first appeared in Return of the Jedi, the B'omarr played a minor role: they only appeared in the form of brain spiders, and were not given their name. The Illustrated Star Wars Universe was the first Star Wars work that named them, and it also provided much of the information known about the order.

The artwork is primarily composed of reused and repurposed [SC: read "recycled"] concept art from the making of the Original Trilogy. In addition to McQuarrie's art, the book also includes the work of other concept artists, including Michael Butkus, Harrison Ellenshaw, Chris Evans, Nilo Rodis-Jamero, Joe Johnston, Michael Pangrazio and Norman Reynolds.
The book focuses on eight major planets from the trilogy, and the text explores each planet with great detail, written from the perspective of a number of in-universe chroniclers.
