"The Science of Dune"

Post by SandChigger »

I keep putting off posting more on the book because I've skimmed most of the articles and now am having a hard time making myself go back and actually read through them.

Some biochemist (who is not a native English speaker) styling himself "SandChiggerBug" has showed up on my blog and Hechtel herself has commented now as well. She promises to post more information on her thinking on her own blog (which is mostly concerned with her hobby of rock climbing). I would have preferred that she had included that sort of thing in her actual article in the book.

Oh well.

Something is about to happen, Hal. Something wonderful!

He uses his own name in a comment on her blog; see if you can spot him. ;)

(He would no doubt view my "outing" him in this way with "discussed" and consider it another "lame" and "low blow." Whatever.)

Here's the link to my "review" of her article with comments:

And here's the link to the post on her blog:

Huh, interesting stuff. I really hate to say this, but as something of a scientist myself, this lady just doesn't sound very intelligent at times. She seems to rattle on quite a bit about the testing of hypotheses. I haven't seen the book yet, but if her analysis is firmly rooted in the scientific method can I safely assume that she presents:

Her hypothesis (and potential null hypotheses)
Her expectations
Her data needs

...for each inquiry she makes? Its one thing to try to bolster your arguments by touting the scientific method; its quite another to lay out a well designed experiment with explicit data needs and expectations that will allow an independent researcher to verify or confirm the results.....
