A Personal Record

Post by Phaedrus »

I think I've gone somewhere between two and three months without sitting down with a Dune book, flipping it open to some random page, and reading a few chapters.

That's definitely a personal record, breaking the previous record of about a week(when I was at home without any of the books).

Sometime, I'll probably do a total reread, but I'm otherwise engaged in the reading department.

I go back this afternoon, only 8 books this semester as opposed to 18.

Im so glad to be done with all that. Right after I passed the bar exam I promised myself I would never, ever take another test again. And I pretty much havent. I even left a job because they wanted me to get my real estate agent's license. Not like I needed it, I had a bar license, but I left.

Sort of. Trying to actually go to class and keep up with my work this term, plus, I've been trying to read other books, instead of rereading the same 6 books for the 232304631845020 bajillionth time.

This Saturday I go to try for my Level IV NICET certification in Fire Alarm System Engineering Technology. So, I haven't been reading much for fun lately. If you ever have a problem sleeping, try picking up the National Fire Alarm Code or National Electrical Code.

ZZZzzz...

Level IV is the highest level attainable (roughly equivalent to an electrical engineer specializing in fire alarm) so I won't have to test for it anymore. I will have to recertify every three years though, but work and training takes care of that.

After that I may try for CFPS - Certified Fire Protection Specialist, which is an even tougher exam. Then I think I'll be happy with the amount of certificates on my cube wall.

I call that my "Ego Wall."

I used to to do construction defect litigation. I defended roofers, framers, sheet metal/HVAC installers, painters and cultured marble installers. For defending the roofers, framers and sheet metal I had to do a lot of reading to know how to defend the kinds of things that they did. HVAC though presented a big learning curve. That is a very technical trade.

I work closely with HVAC. A fire alarm will shut down the air handling units and dampers to prevent the spread of smoke. Imagine something that technical but also being a matter of life and death.

But back on topic...

I think the longest I went without reading any Dune was durring the First Gulf War, what was that, two months? I was playing laser tag with tanks in Germany. It was too damned cold to read.

I only read Dune (all six) once a year, that way it's like coming back home or something. I can't imagine reading them constantly.

The last Dune book I read was Heretics, about a year ago. Then I decided to re-read my entire collection. I did read Hunters a several months ago, but I dont count that as a "Dune" book. I still have that fucking Sandworms on my shelf, and I started it two or three times, but it really is just so bad that I cant get too far. Every once in a while I consider reading Dune and doing a review of it, then change my mind.

Just seeing Omnius and Erasmus at the end of Hunters was a slap in the face to me, I've never even considered Snadworms.

I'm tired of fighting. The HLP doesn't care what FH fans think, they have new fans.

Exactly. I read Sandworms over the holidays and it was definately an all time low. I keep trying to write a scathing review to post, but its like rubbing salt in a wound and I give up. I hate those motherfuckers (just for the record  )

I think that describes most people on this board :) :P
