Apparently the numb bastard who made the remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still is thinking about this. Never read the books, but I hear they are great.

Well, shit.

Who was the brain trust that chose that idiot?

"On the eve of Armageddon, with the entire galaxy at war...."

I hate this kind of stupid hyperbole. IIRC there are less than 300 planets on the farcaster WorldWeb, probably several hundred more colonies not yet on it. The "entire" galaxy is not at war.

And it's not set in the "distant" future. Unless you've got the attention span of a gnat. It's only 700~800 years in the future. Dune at over 21,000 years is distant.

Oh well, I guess the idiot public gets what it deserves these days.

I shudder to think how the complexity of the book would have to be pared down to fit into the time frame of a movie.

And is it just Hyperion, or The Fall of... as well? Filming just the first part would be pretty useless, unless they're planning on two films.

This is a BAD idea.

According to the link it's going to cover both books.

Way too much for a crappy director to handle. :(

Probably too much for any director to handle, from what I have heard about those books. I'm going to have to read them before this comes out so I can join in the raspberries.

The more I think about it, the more I think it's impossible, even for a great director.

Each individual pilgrim's story could fill a whole movie, to do it justice. And you need all those stories to make sense of the bigger story. Simply having a brief synopsis of each pilgrim's tale just wouldn't cut it. And I don't see any other way to get across that volume of information without so much oversimplifying and cutting to the bone that the whole thing would be worthless.

Should pop over by Simmons' forum later to see what they're saying about it.... ;)

UPDATE: Well, what do you know...he's closed them down!

Looks like he let things get out of hand.

Some details on this blog post: http://breadbin.blogspot.com/2009/01/in-mourning.html

Re the bit about user names: I registered over there using this username and it appears I used my sandchigger email address and signed "—SC" when I wrote him.

I guess maybe that's why I never heard anything back! ;)

I will say that the times I visited it did seem a little cliquish. I really didn't like the boardware much, either: messages in a thread weren't all displayed like they are with this one. I guess that would make it easier to ignore posts from people you didn't want to read, but it means more clicking and loading from the server.

Oh well.

I wonder if the worst offenders were worse behaved than us...er, I mean, me?! :P

i hate forums with that type of conversation view.. I stopped posting at one altogether because it got too annoying to click and read each time :P

So ... I went over and joined up on the new fan board.

Looks like the "Danfans" are about as happy with the choice of Derrickson as we are with the choice of Berg.

Didn't need no crystal ball for that one, eh? ;)

what putrid bullshit. who are these self-important bloated assholes ?

keep control of your board in the fashion you want or shut the fuck up.

I refrained from commenting, too. whining bitches.
"TROLLS NOT ALLOWED" on the new board - goodchr-st, I wanted to
comment on that - how do you fool ass cocksuckers plan to stop a
determined troll ? ask Andrew Ian Dodge about that. I figure
he was a regular poster on that thing too, huh ?

the one thing I just cannot stand is the smug pretentiousness these failed
fucking writers and thinkers and artists display on the web. And they
are failed. if they had any talent, they'd be real writers, or tenured
professors. they're not, they're blahgging on the web, and thinking it's
important to "culture". jack-offs.

I do this bullshit for fun and cause the cocksuckers won't let me go
back to work yet, or pick up more than 5 goddamn pounds, so I'm
trying not to go stir crazy in this house. I don't have any delusions
about my intellect. Half the time I'm stump-stupid and confused.

and maybe me and TROLLS LIKE ME are bad for the net, causing
some poor self-esteemed challenged moron to feel bad if I call them
an idiot or make fun of them, maybe that "stifles" the discussion
or if they stop posting maybe I've somehow "deprived" them of
something - but I only do it to pretentious assholes who deserve it, and
fuck them anyway.

Well, Simmons is a "real writer" and a pretty darned good one at that. I like him, anyway. (Even if I have to pretend that that one Olympos book never happened. Ghastly shite.) ;)

This has had me thinking again about boards and websites and ordinary users as admins. I've mentioned before that I advised Byron way back in the day that he should have set up separate "boardadmin" and "Byron Merritt" accounts and not let people know he was both.

Sure, it's a little white lie, but it allows you to be as strict as you want as admin and as free and outspoken as you want as a regular user, without the latter garnering the personal ire for the actions of the former. System worked fine for me on our site at work for over two years, with well over a thousand active users at the high point. (Of course, Japanese uni students and faculty are generally better behaved than your average webizen. At least when posting in English. ;) )

Another thing I really hated about both Dumb Novels and Arrakeen was not being able to question or object to admin decisions in public. It's a bad sign, in my opinion, if you can't have even one thread for that sort of back-n-forth.

Anyhoo, off topic! ;)

what was the topic again ?

I don't know. something surely set me off yesterday.

I'm not sure I'm expressing this feeling correctly or clearly -
there's just something about people like Andrew Ian Dodge
et al that makes me irrationally angry.

It's not like anger at Bill O-Reilly, etc. Hell, if nothing else,
he's just doing a job. He gets paid to be the ass he is.
Andrew Ian Dodge is an ass for no profit whatsoever, but really
thinks he's relevant.

dunno. gonna quit thinking about it for awhile, tho ...
makes my head hurt.
