Gedo Senki

Post by Omphalos »

A few years ago Miyazaki made an anime version of The Tales of Earthsea, by Ursula K. LeGuin. Here is a link to Miyazaki's page for the production, and here is the IMDB link. Has anyone ever seen this? I'd love to see it but I don't think its been released in the States yet (I'm guessing that the English-speaking actors were for the UK edition).
Something is about to happen, Hal. Something wonderful!

I remember hearing about it, but haven't seen it.

I also remember having problems with the title, literally "Ged's Battle-Tale (or Record)".

First off, Ged was his secret name.

Second, it should be rendered Geddo.

Third, why the focus on battle?

I have a poke around later and see if I can find how the title is translated for the books.

(D'uh. I just had a look at the linked page. :D )

I've not seen it. Keep in mind that Goro Miyazaki directed this animated film, not his well renowned father Hayao Miyazaki. VERY important distinction.

Reviews for the film have been somewhat mixed. The IMDB entry sits at 6.5 which is quite low. ANN's review of Gedo Senki is somewhat more flattering, but it still doesn't sound all that impressive. For what it's worth, it seems everyone agrees Gedo Senki is a more gritty production than most Studio Ghibli films, darker even the Mononoke Hime.

Might be worth a shot, but it also might be best to distance your expectations from Hayao's impressive body of work.
