Zombieland?

Post by SandChigger »

Any thoughts?

I've been seeing the ad at least once every hour or two today. Immediately thought of Omph the first time I saw it. :D

Ive been meaning to start a topic. I'm totally there. Looks like a total riff on zombie lore.

Other than Woody Harrelson, the only other actor I recognize is the kid with him in the pickup and supermarket ... whose name I don't know (and haven't bothered to look for) but he played Christina Ricci's younger brother in the werewolf comedy Cursed. (And which I only remember because I caught it again one night last week on Siffy. :P )

Looks to be a romp. (Love the piano trap! )

There are a bunch of trailers floating around out there. All of them look fun. Woody looks to be perfect for that role.

Could be as fun as Shaun of the Dead :)=

Zombie cinema has been so overexposed that I think parody and comedy of the genre is really the only way to go. Granted, I did enjoy Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake, but Shaun of the Dead was a great way to have fun with the zombie film again. This new Zombieland looks hilarious as well, but I get the feeling most didn't connect with it. Was watching the trailer in theatres recently and I was one of the few having any fun while it played. I hope it's good :)

Shooting the baby zombie had to be one of the best things I've seen on film, EVAR.

Hmmmm. Didn't notice when I was in the theater. I was engrossed, that's all I can remember.

I didn't think it could live up to the trailer... but it did, and sustained it throughout the entire film.

It was also refreshing to see a ~100% upbeat zombie movie, it was quite an achievement that the saddest moment in the film also got a big laugh :P
And that, children, is how the little bunny rabbit got his fluffy white tail.

As a minimum, we must demand from SF that it be wiser than the world it speaks to.

I finally saw it last night, loved it. It got kind of sappy for a little while but the zombie killing made up for it.

Why's Japan so far behind with TV and movies? Do they just have so much of their own stuff that they wait to see what does well enough over here to import?

When it comes to stuff like music Japan is generally in the lead, lots of bands I know (mostly metal admittedly, Japanese seem to love north american metal) release their albums in Japan before they release them back at home. I've never heard of them being late released over there.

Translation lag? Different peak movie-going seasons? Marketing?

Mostly translation lag, I imagine. Plus they put out dubbed versions, but those might mostly come later, for the DVD release. Except for animations and movies they deem targeted at children.

There are a limited number of "translation houses" and they've got pretty much everything tied up. Probably the biggest is Natsuko Toda; her name is on probably a good half of the major features. She doesn't actually do all the work herself (in fact, since she's getting older, I imagine she does very little of it), but she signs off on everything her deshi-tachi (disciples) produce. It seems like there's invariably one major blooper in the subtitles of every movie they do. So much so that there are threads devoted to them on the Japanese forums.

What really irks me about the woman herself is how she worms her way in to most of the big press conferences; she's kinda like the "Official Interpreter For The Stars!" Really intrusive, a SUPERSTAR in her own right, rather than just being there to fulfill a needed function.

And that reminds me, the whole "voice actor" industry over here is out of control as well. They're WAY too visible for my tastes. And most of them really do have "faces made for radio". ;)

Right, translations... forgot about that. I hate overdubbing, subtitles is far better.

Yeah.

And what I hate about Japanese voice actors (seiyû) is that it's so painfully obvious that they all wanted to be REAL actors so BAD ... but were just too cellulite-butt-bump ugly to make it in anything except Elephant Man revivals.

So they overcompensate with the voice ACTING. So every foreign (meaning, non-Japanese) character gets a slight gainjin accent; you can tell just by listening whether the person is supposed to be young, old, smart, dumb, sexy, horrid, etc.

That's why I refuse to watch anything that's dubbed into Japanese. They just turn everything they tongue-touch into absolute crap. :snooty:
