Here is a link to the newest trailer.

I remember almost nothing of the first movie.

I'm a huge Tron fan, I have the original movie memorized. I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THIS!

That light cycle trailer IS badass. Nice to see that Jeff Bridges is in it, too.

The first Tron film was proto-CG fluff. There's not much to remember, especially nothing of the barely-there story. I admit I still enjoy the film to this day, but it's really just a pretty (now very dated) and fun fantasy film for video gamers. I find it curious as a very rare example of a main stream film made so experimental and marketed so strongly at what was a very niche demographic of the time. Since then, gaming has exploded to the point where even parents and jocks now game. Who knew? :)

I watched the trailer for the Tron Legacy sequel on io9 the other day and it certainly looks pretty, but the story sounds rather pedestrian. Of course, it's not surprising that the story doesn't sound all that engaging, since Tron never was much more than eye candy. I'll probably watch the sequel. I think it would be rather fun to watch the two films on DVD back to back with friends. Watching the difference between CG special effects from then to now would be a real laugh :)

Those of you who continue to profess
a belief in the Users will receive
the standard substandard training.
This will result in your eventual
elimination.

Those of you who renounce this
superstitious and hysterical belief
will be eligible to join the Warrior
Elite of the MCP.

I've seen several people including Tron in best SF movies lists, or underrated SF movie lists -- in fact I saw it in such a list just a couple of days ago. This seems bizarre to me. Some people talk about how "innovative" it was for the time. Hell, I thought it was crappy and overrated even way back then.

I used to play the hell out of that video game at Shakey's Pizza Parlor. I watched the movie when it came out. I remember thinking it was pretty cool. Like I said, I don't remember much. I remember liking The Black Hole much more. I even had a Maximillion action figure from that one.

I had the Storybook right around that time, but didn't see the movie until years later.

Hehehe. I wub you :romance-inlove:

Seriously though, Tron must have something going for it or I wouldn't still be watching it. Or maybe I give myself too much credit as a film phile. I will say this: I don't really mind properties like Tron being remade or given a sequel. Yes, a Tron sequel is the 1980's being sold back to us. But the original was just fluff. Fun, entertaining fluff, but fluff nonetheless. I'd rather Hollywood remake Tron than risk remaking something like Aliens, Blade Runner or Psycho. If they must attempt remakes at all, let them abuse remakes of The Manchurian Candidate, Ocean's Eleven, Shaft or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Sometimes they even get it right. But I don't want them to touch the masterpieces, especially if it's some moron director trying to outdo a master. If one is going to take on Hitchcock, Kubrick or Cameron, they better have artistic cred and a lot of luck.

wasn't the original Tron a Disney film ?

I surely remember it - took all three of the boys to see it
in the theater probably more times than Star Wars. Ended
up having to get them an Apple ][ computer behind that.
or that might have been War Games ....

anyway, I remember thinking the effects were amazing,
and the storyline a classic Disney good vs evil thing.

remember Black Hole, too, and I'm sure that was a
Disney thing - Slim Pickens as the old beat-up floating
droid-thing .... seem to recall a little controversy at the
time too about how "dark" it was for a Disney film.

ahhh, memories.

fuck all that.

TRON KICKED ASS.. Personally because I was going thru data processing/advanced programming when I was in Highschool. The reference's from the film just made it more personal. The effects were cool for the time, not the top notch, but fun.

THE BLACK HOLE KICKED ASS... was new and cool, effects decent, and Dark.

as for all the back and forth about then and now.. sometimes ya just have to breath, let your head air out, have some dam fun!!

Jeff Bridges kicked ass in that movie.

TRON Sequel.. WIll watch and Hope it Kicks ass (cant watch trailers at work).

I think it looks pretty cool, although I do feel like I'm supposed to be more excited about it than I actually am. I'm also prepared for it to surprise me.

Jeff Bridges is awesome. (EDIT: I'm about a thousand times more excited to see him in True Grit, though, than I am about this one).

Another one where the new CG tech demo aspect is more important than the story, like Avatar?

My impression from one trailer viewing is that I'll probably wait for it on the little screen. ;)

And yeah I am quite curious to see what they did with a Tron reboot.
The original was great for the time(take that Neo and your poxy Matrix ! :)), let's hope the general blandness arising from the need of the producers to cater for everyone will not turn it into a bore fest of paraphernalia pushing...
As long as they don't make a Tron Happy Meal things should be ok !
