Re: The Legacy of Heorot, by Niven, Pournelle & Barnes

I thought the second book was terrible too. Thematically it was also about the individual's failure to understand environment and other people, but I thought it was just such a stretch for the test tube babies to be so far out of whack psychologically with people who were born of a woman. Its been ...

Re: The Legacy of Heorot, by Niven, Pournelle & Barnes

Good review, I really enjoyed this book. The follow-up book, utter shite though. Not sure what happened other than the copy/paste function worked a little too well for the second book.

Re: Books in the pile

Just finished Matter . Extremely good book, I'll have to read some of the books he wrote between this one and Use of Weapons , because the tech in this book is phenominal - and it's leaps and bounds ahead of what was in his earlier books (not that those lacked, but they are notibly dated in the way...

Re: Books in the pile

Just finished Choke by Chuck Palahniuk and started on Fight Club. Could not do scifi again, I started Left Hand of Darkness and enjoyed it but just wanted a different flavor.

Anyone else ever read his stuff? Best I can tell he is a sick twisted fuck who writes about craziness.

Re: Books in the pile

Finished Anansi Boys, what a fun book. Really enjoyed it. Shifting gears and trying to start on a Game of Thrones, not really into fantasy but trying it out anyway. Maybe 50 pages in and already thinking of switching to a different book.

Re: Books in the pile

Just finished Ringworld Engineers and I am starting on The Anansi Boys. Niven does a good job in that book (and the first) but I think I will wait to read the last one, I have heard it is not as enjoyable. I am reading Anansi for the first time, I picked it up at the same time as American Gods (when...

Ill be there the 21st. Ill shoot you the contacts for the library soon. Both the archivists teach classes and have office hours, so you should call ahead and confirm that you are going. Please do, I will have about half a day to try and do this so I would rather not waste it if they are not gonna b...

Re: What did you have to read in high school?

Same as the lot above except I remember in my senior year psych class we read Clockwork Orange. Other than that the fair above is about right. We read a lot of short stories but most of them I can't remember titles.

I too picked this one up and could not put it down. Watched the miniseries a couple of weeks back and enjoyed that as well. Not as much as the book but at least it was relatively faithful to the book.

I agree with most of your review, except for the bit about him being 'boring and stuck-up sounding'. I think that Asimov's simplistic style is the most enjoyable part of his writing. He writes like I would imagine I would write, just simple basic stuff. It reads well and served as an excellent intro...

I just watched A Scanner Darkly a week or so ago, although I despise Keanu (SP??) Reeves, I enjoyed the movie. I have the book in the pile to be read but have not done so yet.

I really enjo PKDs style of writing, the movies are ok but it is apples and oranges, books and movies that is.

I tell you guys what, work has really kept me busy since the New Year. We have more work than we could burn, which is always a good thing. It seems that KJA has taken over Byron's account again. Every couple of months it doesn't sound like Byron it sounds just like KJA being his typical prick self.

Anyone else ever noticed that?

I am still convinced Byron is an ass hat but sometimes he goes over the top to ultra ass hat.

That does look cool, at least this author is still alive to authorize changes to the story, instead of having his corpse fucked with no lube.

I just picked up Children of the Mind and plan to read it in the next week or so.
