I loved The Road, but it's definitely questionable whether the message is "look how bloody terrible this will be, we'd better not freaking go this route", or if it's just dark for the sake of dark. Agree. The story is dark, dark, dark, yet it ends on a note that could be construed as good...

Its all in the tone that you take. There have been plenty of dystopia/catastrophe books in the past, but I would say that by a large margin most of those from before the 2000's were about rebirth; as in, the world we know goes to hell, but something better comes from it. A lot that I see these days ...

Re: Obits

Martin H. Greenberg has passed:

http://www.locusmag.com/News/2011/06/martin-greenberg/

There is probably nobody here who has not at leat seen a Greenberg SF anthology. He did over 2000 of them over his lifetime.

Radio Free Albemuth

A crazy, but interesting story. It's now an indie film.

I could not believe it. Ita one of those atores that specialize in PBs, but they are starting to branch out. I dont think I stole it from them, as they had a decent markup on it, but still, I almost (almost) feel guilty.

That may have been 3,000 pages ago, but I think a wizard came along and they chased him. Again.

He let the story drag for years, then in a year wrote, like, three giant doorstoppers that absolutely sucked. I read two of them and decided life was too short for the "grand finale" and sold the copy I had purchased before I even cracked the spine. And then he wrote Cell, and Under the Do...

Looks like its a bug in the subsilver2 theme. At least I only see it in that skin. No idea how to fix that, so the best I can say is switch to prosilver, or another theme.

I did not see it on iTunes last time I looked. I have the ABC app but they only have, like, episodes 14, 15, 16 & 17. Didn't want to ruin it if I liked it by jumping in so late.

New and Newish TV and Films

I came across the following list of recent SFF TV and films through a listserv that I subscribe to. The poster is looking for reviewers, but I saw a lot of things on there that I had never heard of before, and thought it might be a good list to start with when looking for new things to watch. Memorial Day

Hope you all had a good holiday. My side of the family has not had any servicepersons since my grand-dad's generation (he retired in the 60's from the Air Force with his second star, and died in the 70's), but in my wife's family her dad was a Lt. Been listening to a lot of old Tom Waits lately, mostly stuff before Swordfishtrombone. I have a lot of his albums and I generally like them all, but I prefer the very old stuff from the 70's; his tipys sounding stuff, like Closing Time.
