I heard about Banks a couple of days ago, sad news there. He was still fairly young, wasn't he? I know what you mean, that is definitely the low point of the song. I do like the 3-way vocal structure of rough male, melodic male, and female vocals, but that one part does sound a little silly. All this coincidental connections do is make the writing cheesy. Especially when implemented in a large universe, it artificially deflates the size of the fictional world. Film-worthy books -- a list
Ok, what think you of this list ? I haven't read most of those, actually. The only thing I can say for sure is that I don't think A Fire Upon the Deep would work out too well. So many of the things that make it a great book would NOT translate well to film -- the Known Net communications, the changi...

I've seen the movie, and it was very decent for that sort of thing. It reminded me a lot of K-Pax -- a troubled individual trying to cope with life by pretending to be an alien. Quite touching, although it's not the kind of movie I wanna watch all the time. And I like John Cusack too. It is about th...

I recommend Truffaut's movie... :) I had never seen it either, so I took your recommendation and found it at the video store the other day (I was amazed, since the selection there is getting thinner and thinner all the time, becoming more focused on what's current and popular). I just got done watc...

Movies that never were
Here's some interesting reading on some movies that were planned but never actually got made.
Sounds like we dodged a bullet with Oliver Stone's Planet of the Apes.

Octavia Butler's "favorite" movie!
Here it is, Devil Girl from Mars, the movie Butler says got her started writing, because it was SO bad that anyone could write a better story. Now you can watch this cinematic gem too!

12 upcoming sci-fi remakes and revivals
Here's the list. Some I'd heard of already, some not.
I can't see a single item on the list that really needs a remake or continuation.
Hollywood continues to cannibalize itself.

A little humor for you
Here's a video of comedian John Hodgman (the PC guy from those Mac commercials) giving a short talk at a TED conference (Technology, Entertainment, Design). It's all about aliens, flying saucers, lost time, the Fermi paradox, and he also makes reference to several sf books and movies, including Dune.

I didn't mean my statement as an iron-clad rule. Of course there are exceptions. And of course the better the story, the more I'm willing to forgive the excessive length. But still, I don't think I've ever read a book over, say, 500 pages that I thought really, really needed that much space to be to...

I live in Springfield, the crappy capital of this decrepit state called Illinois. I've been here about 8 years now. It doesn't compare to the places above in beauty or interest. But ok, here are a few pics anyway..... Abe Lincoln Museum: http://www.illinois.com/images/cities/full/springfield.jpg Lin...

Didn't Simmons make a passing reference to Vance in Hyperion ? I know he mentioned several sf writers in there, and I think Vance was one of them. What do you all think of Dean Koontz? I read a bunch of his stuff when I was a teenager, and really liked him back then. I have no idea how he'd strike m...
